No! Not Fletch! Nobody was as good at standing by a keyboard and clapping his hands whilst pretending to be a musician as he was.

Fletch held them all together, without him they wouldn't have lasted than long and we would have missed out on so much fantastic music. Releasing four 10/10 albums on the spin beginning with Black Celebration has, IMHO never been equalled, the rest of their output is none too shabby either. Without Fletch involved, not musically of course, the structure wouldn't have been in place for them to achieve it.

I know. It was a joke that even Fletch joined in on. Martin wrote the songs, Alan arranged the music, Dave sang the words, and Fletch made the tea.

I always enjoyed watching him when they played live, playing the odd sound effect on his keyboard and doing some hand claps. On the few occasions when he had to play some bass notes he had no sense of tempo or timing. But he was definitely the glue that held them together and it was clear that the rest of the band really appreciated his presence and influence.

Black Celebration, MFTM, Violator & SOFAD was an incredible run of albums, and I cannot think of any other band that has been that consistent. Even their earlier ones, such as Construction Time Again and Some Great Reward have some real gems. For all his lack of musical ability, they would never have been the band they were without him.

I always thought that was Vince Clarke, but if it was Fletch then that's a fine legacy.

Last time I saw them was on the Exciter Tour. First time was Flicks in Dartford before they troubled the charts. No stage, just a dance floor with everyone just hanging around in front of them. Only thing I remember is Dave Gahan was wearing a pair of brown leather jack boots.

Saw them on the Spirit tour at the Olympic stadium. I'm not really one for stadium gigs, but they're as good a stadium band as you're going to get.

First half of the set list was mainly from their new album (Cover Me being the standout). The second half was a belter, with a great selection from their peak-era. Reworkings of Everything Counts and World in My Eyes were fantastic, as was a cover of Heroes (David Bowie had only recently died).

And Fletch clapped along like the trooper he was throughout the whole show.
