Was having a discussion with mates about football reporting in the press and on TV and words that journalists use that you really only associate with football and don't really hear used elsewhere an din everyday speech. Words like "brandish" as in "the ref is going to brandish a yellow card here, Martin" and "melee" as in "now most of the Everton bench have piled into the melee, Gary".
Which other words do you all only associate with football reporting/commentary?
In ladies TV football commentary the word ''Quality'' ( repeatedly said by Sue Smith especially ) Quality player, Quality pass, Quality goal etc, etc ! That word is repeated far too much by women commentating on ladies football matches, but hardly ever used by male commentators when describing mens football matches !
