Death Penalty

Post by Lucky7 »

I was reading this morning that both the Phillipines and Sri Lanka want to reintroduce the death penalty mainly for drug offences

Thoughts?

I think in the Philippines they already do it via various means before the drug dealers even get to Court !!
Most people who live there approve of the harsh methods of President Duterte as drugs are doing so much damage to that country, especially to the young people. Philippines is a very poor country where many of the people live in poverty. The Roman Catholic Church is not blameless either, encouraging people not to use any forms or birth control, thus too many children born into poverty.

Quite a few Asian countries have the death penalty for drugs offences. It should really act as the ultimate deterrent but there are still people who are willing to take a chance. You can't blame these two countries for wanting to introduce it.

Like Sid said the Philippines just going around killing drug dealers in the street so you could say it’s already in place in that country.

There’s an English’s lady in Indonesia on the death penalty wing of the prison for drug smuggling, I was reading about her case recently and she’s refused all help from the British consulate and sits waiting for her fate to happen.

I am not calling for the death penalty here, although after you read some of the crimes that people do especially against children you sometimes think well they deserve to die for what they did, but it’s a reaction to the feelings at that point.

I do wish that we get tougher on crime, that we especially step it up against drugs, dealers and suppliers. However, that’s wishful thinking on my park I guess.

Right wingers do not have to believe in the death penalty. I do not believe in long sentences either. The rehabilitation methods in Scandinavian countries are proven to work. Systems like they have in the U.S do not. The U.S system is all about retribution which is f ing strange when they all believe in god.

Yup. Somebody commits murder, therefore we just say there there, you had a poor family start. Have a sweetie and let’s talk about how we can put things right. While we’re at it let’s see how we can bring the victim back to life.

Listened to the Adam Buxton podcast (which is a great listen any way) most recent episode with Maya Foa, the director of Human rights charity Reprieve. They talk about the death penalty, albeit from quite a one sided point of view. Worth a listen.

One of the weirdest things was that loads of American prisons were buying the drugs they use to kill people from a pharmacy run out the back of a driving school in Acton.

So we should look forwards to Anderson Breivik being released soon and given some rehabilitation in how to use his gun to better effect next time then shall we?

It’s because most pharma companies in the US won’t entertain the states that use lethal injection it’s bad for there image/publicity etc

I’m not sure that’s exactly how our penal system actually works, dohy.

Maximum penalty in Norway is 21 years. However, if you have committed murder or are mentally unstable, you are reviewed every 5 years thereafter. So you can spend life in prison.

In Norway, the reoffenders are around 20% over a 2 year period, in Scotland it is 56% in a year, with the remainder of the UK between 45&50% in the first year.

So although they spend around £98k per prisoner per year, compared to our £40-50k, it works out much cheaper as significantly less as re-offending rates are much less. This reduces the time/ money on police and courts.

I read about Sri Lanka hiring new hangmen. They had plenty of applicants, but who would apply for a job like that apart, and how do you go about training them?

Its time it was brought back to this country if you think otherwise, then you are part of the murder problem, no-one wants to be hung so the murder rate will disappear almost overnight, then the prisons become less over crowded, all jail times should be made longer too, this will deter the career criminal, the burden prisoners put on the state is unbelievable, free up the money for better causes, if jails are tough less people will be inclined to commit crime, it works so well in other parts of the world, but its the bleeding hearts in this country that actually cause crime as they don't believe in effective punishment.

Its so simple really, but so many politicians are spineless.

I was pleased that the law for murderers is going to change, no parole if you don't confess where a body is hidden.

Yeah, of course it is 🤡

These Asian countries with the death penalty have all solved their drug problems, haven't they? Oh, no they haven't.

Absolutely bonkers that there's a discussion on here about drug dealers being murdered in the street by the Police and it's shrugged off. The gammon on here are going further and further right. Beradogs with the most sane comments so far.

It’s been proven time & again the death penalty is not a deterrent to “capital” crimes. If you think the State killing a convicted criminal in cold blood is a proportional punishment for, say, murder, then that’s different. But I’m completely against it.

Drug dealers are murdered in the street here too, not by police though.

100k per prisoner per year, wow. Even our 50k per prisoner per year is mental. Genuine people who've never committed a crime struggle on way way less than that, yet we spend it trying to get a scumbag to change his ways and by the looks of it failing to do so.

Give them longer sentences without parole and I'm sure their attitudes will change pretty quickly.

Are you suggesting we feed them too well? Tuffers does it for 25 quid a week. Perhaps the government should hire him to run penal catering.
