Storm in a Tea Cup

Post by Forty-Niner »

Alex Morgan, who scored the winner for the United States against England in the Women's World Cup semi-final, has been much maligned for her goal celebration. This consisted if miming drinking a cup of tea. A little bit of fun or a hard hitting political gesture?
Some sources suggested it was in honour of the Colonies that fought for and won independence from Britain after the Boston Tea Party back in the 18th century.
If this was the case it went over my head. Surely it was just a bit of fun sticking her little finger up at a nation of tea drinkers.
Let's show we can take a joke and move on rather than making a sour grapes issue of the incident.

Has she really been maligned? I've seen a couple of headlines in the "usually outraged" corners of the press media, but don't think anyone is seriously pissed off with her. I thought it was a bit of fun too.

I did see a couple of amusing memes on social media along the lines of "We'll get our own back if we score against the USA by miming shooting up a school"

Thought it was wine rather than tea at the time 😂 Shame we blew that penalty at the end, would've been fun to see the Americans knocked off their perch but alas not to be.

Here’s what I wrote on Tuesday evening -

Yes, I’m sure it was in tribute to a great British institution. I was looking forward to White scoring and pointing a finger and pretending to shoot all her team mates dead, in tribute to a great American institution, the high school massacre

The real joy is Yorkshire Tea have sent her a pack of tea bags saying that they didn't realize she didn't have any tea.

I noticed it at the time and thought it was funny. Haven’t seen any of the furore since, I must read the wrong papers.

Couldn’t be bothered to watch the game, couldn’t be bothered to read about it either. More important things in life like saving the tiger.
