Channel 4
This seems to be a topic of much debate, so I thought it was something this Board could settle once and for all.
Channel 4 is currently publicly owned, but is entirely privately financed. So it's not costing any of us a penny. But the Government has announced that it intends to privatise it anyway.
What do you think should happen? Obviously I'll forward on the results of this survey to Nadine Dorries so she can give our opinions the due regard they deserve.

If its making a profit, that profit should be going into the off shore bank account of a crony.Dunners wrote: ↑Tue Apr 05, 2022 12:48 pm This seems to be a topic of much debate, so I thought it was something this Board could settle once and for all.

Re: Channel 4
There is absolutely no reason to privatise it other than to keep on the usual Tory policy of flogging off the family silver and then spunking away the profits. See also BA, BP, BT, BL, British Rail, steel, coal, gas, electricity, Post Office and the rest.

It’ll be nice to have a non UK domiciled billionaire in control of what we watch. What could go wrong?

Re: Channel 4
Hasn't there been a change of policy in that the motivation for this move is to silence scrutiny of the govt.
Not forgetting of course revenge for Krishnan making Dorries look like the simpleton she is on air.

It's not you but I wonder if you have been in a deep coma for the last 12 years not to notice that creating hate and division in society is Tory policy these days.Give it to Jabo wrote: ↑Wed Apr 06, 2022 12:50 pm Is it me, or is the the world rapidly becoming a less friendly, tolerant place??

Even the grand old Tories are turning on this lot......figures such as John Major, Heseltine and Ken Clarke are seen as reasonable.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Wed Apr 06, 2022 1:36 pmIt's not you but I wonder if you have been in a deep coma for the last 12 years not to notice that creating hate and division in society is Tory policy these days.Give it to Jabo wrote: ↑Wed Apr 06, 2022 12:50 pm Is it me, or is the the world rapidly becoming a less friendly, tolerant place??
Key question: where is it going to end???
Why can't the Centrists, or Left of Centrists, produce more viable opponents than Biden and Starmer? Oh for a pre-Iraq Blair. (never thought, I'd say that!) Can the Left ever "do" Populism?

Re: Channel 4
Had its heyday circa 2010 with the Inbetweeners, Peep Show etc, now can't remember the last time I watched it.
Naked attraction, Married at first sight Andorra and Gogglebox on life support shows how far it's dipped.

Re: Channel 4
The thing is, instinctively, I feel that it should remain publicly owned. But then I think about the stuff it actually broadcasts and it's certainly in need of a shaking up.
But in the interest of providing it with some support, here's my view on what it has going for it:
Having written that list, it's hard to really care what the Government does with it.
But in the interest of providing it with some support, here's my view on what it has going for it:
- Dispatches can sometimes be okay.
- The foreign affairs coverage on C4 news is actually better than all other options (IMO), but the rest of the news can be a bit... Guardian TV.
- Unreported World is usually excellent and informative.
- A Place in the Sun - essential viewing to see the latest sh*thole Gary and Maureen from Harlow are about to spunk their life savings on in Spain.
- GBBO - getting a bit tired now, and has already demonstrated that it can hop from one channel to another if it wants to.
- 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown - It's better than 8 out of 10 Cats, and can provoke the odd chuckle. And different to Countdown original (more of which below).
- Countdown - It never really recovered from the death of Richard Whiteley. And after Rachel Riley steps down as the obligatory piece of brain in a skirt, we'll no doubt be treated to an assistant presenter who is more... erm... acceptable to the Committee
Having written that list, it's hard to really care what the Government does with it.

Comic Strip
NFL
Kabaddi
Black Books
Should 100% remain Publicly owned and contributing to the public good rather than turning a profit for slimey friends of the Tory party.

Re: Channel 4
Still produces the odd excellent comedy (this way up, flowers and stath let's flats all really good in recent years) and has the leeway to do something like it's a sin, which you get the sense the supposedly wokerati BBC wouldn't touch with a barge pole. Stealing taskmaster from Dave was also a clever idea. But it does seem to go for a quantity not quality approach most of the time.
