We really need to know who's responsible for the January signings

Post by ComeOnYouOs »

it's time the owners told us fans, who was really responsible for bringing in the crap players in January.
No bullshit, the truth.

We know it was Ling who brought Coleman here because he said in his interview, just before Jackett was sacked.
He said he had been following Coleman for two years, and finally was able to get him.

That was way before Jacket came here, so it was definitely Ling.
We need to know about the rest, because the whole episode was a disaster.

That post on the other board showed the initial targets for midfield but the club (DoF) failed to recruit any of them and we ended up with one from Ling's original spreadsheet, which many hoped had been shredded after the appointment of KJ.

But how do you know Jackett didn’t rubber stamp the Coleman signing? I can’t imagine if Jackett had insisted we didn’t sign the kid, we still would have ploughed ahead

Also, to follow the theme of another thread, the signing of Nouble was shocking. Anyone could have seen that from a mile off but apparently Jackett insisted on his signing because he’d had a few good games against teams of his in the past?

That says all you need to know about Kenny’s recruitment and judging of player ability in my opinion.

Why did Ling wait 2 years to bring Coleman in? What did Ling see for 2 years that no one else could?

Let’s just hope a condition in Richie Wellen’s contract stated, he has full control of transfers of who comes in/out.
He will have a mass clear out, half this squad will go.
Hopefully he will start with showing the current transfer committee the door!

If the transfer committee still insists on being involved with player recruitment next season after our poor January business then we deserve another season of failure

For me this suggests that ML's list of 'contacts' is far less comprehensive than we would like to believe, it's an established pattern of sticking with what you know rather than being proactive and getting your hands dirty.

We will go round in circles with this. The club, just before sacking KJ, rallied around to basically put out the message that ‘the manager decides what players come in’ so KJ is squarely to blame, right?

Well, apart from the fact that we know that Coleman was on Lings radar when KJ was at Portsmouth, the alleged list of signings on the other board tbat KJ wanted and we failed to sign, and the fact that, in a bizarre move, as soon as the Jan signings were put in the team, the manager, who allegedly picked them, moaned constantly about how they didn’t have enough experience for league two.

So something doesn’t add up.

I think what’s pretty clear is that either the process is so convoluted that the owners, Ling, nor the manager actually knows who was responsible, or that the wording on how they work has been manipulated to suit Ling (and to a degree, the owners, when they fail).

Saying that, after hearing bits about Kenny, he doesn’t exactly sound like he was of sound judgement in his time here, and either he did have a level of say (even if that was, take this player or nothing), or he didn’t have the bollocks to stand up for himself and the team and say no to the sh*t he was given.

Regardless, what matters is we don’t continue to make the same mistakes. The new ceo, with fresh eyes, should be all over this already. Refine the process, what went wrong, who does Richie want to work going forward, etc… my only issue is that Nigel and Martin have been so insistent on the success of the process, I think they are a bit blinded by it. Challenge culture and all that, Nigel, let’s start putting that into practice and let’s really challenge what we know and what we think we know so Richie gets the best chance of success.

You’re obsession with this is a bit grating. I dunno where you’ve plucked this from, or if it’s tongue in cheek.

Having more budget does not guarantee success if you put it in the wrong hands. All managers and DoF are restricted by a budget but the best ones think outside of the box on how to use it and are thinking 2-3 years in the future on building a team, not just players to fill out a squad for numbers.

With the same approach next year, we could have a budget 10 times higher than anyone else and we might just scrape the playoffs with a bit of luck.

Considering how much money we wasted during January we would have been better off actually signing at least two of Kenny's first choices . Instead the club went for quantity over quality .

Yup and instead of operating a thin squad back in August having a cover RB and additional senior pro CM would've avoided many of the squad issues that cost us over winter.

Too many false economies, time for change.

Yep, all of this.

The fact Wellens has come in as Head Coach rather than Manager, as KJ was, kind of worries me that he won't be given full control and it'll still be The Committee ie Ling making calls on what players we bring in.

Doesn’t the fact that KJ was called “manager” and still had to deal with the ineffective transfer committee show that these job titles are meaningless. If Wellens doesn’t have full control of who comes in and who goes out in the summer then the club may as well give up now.

I am fairly certain that control of transfers would have been a negotiation point when trying to get Wellens through the door. My suspicion is that it took a significant increase in salary offering and concession of full control of transfers to convince RW to sign.

It felt like Kenny said what positions he wanted strengthening and Ling went out and signed who he thought he could for those positions . If Martin wants to target what players we sign then maybe he should put his tracksuit back on and manage the team himself . He might not be picking the team but he seems to be picking some signings . If we want to fail again next season just carry on has we are . In the Summer the club has to have a rethink on what direction they want to go in . This season we have flirted with relegation thanks to Kenny and our transfer committee . Personally I would choose to go with exactly who Richie wants without any interference from our inept transfer committee .lastly, if we’re unable to bring in our manager’s first, second or even third choice of players then we should just forget it and play our youngsters. If our January business is anything to go by we’d save money and be miles better of.
