I'm guessing some of the losses in tax revenue will be offset against pollution related spending.

Indoor and outdoor air pollution costs European economies as much as US$1.6 trillion (£1.05 trillion) each year in deaths and diseases according to a new study published by the World Health Organisation today (April 28).

Whether they are cleaner remain to be seen though, as always lots of conflicting stories.

If anyone thinks we won't have a "car tax" in future is deluding themselves. The government will not give up that revenue.

Once driverless tech takes off, most people wont need to own a car.

Some posting comments on here talk about greater use of public transport, well that is ok if you live in City or Town areas but not so applicable in countryside areas.

This. Better public transport, rail, light rail etc - plus cheaper, driverless taxis for the final mile.

But what about the environmental effects of building the car?
A report by the Ricardo consultancy estimated that production of an average petrol car will involve emissions amounting to the equivalent of 5.6 tonnes of CO2, while for an average electric car, the figure is 8.8tonnes. Of that, nearly half is incurred in producing the battery. Despite this, the same report estimated that over its whole lifecycle, the electric car would still be responsible for 80% of the emissions of the petrol car. More recently, an FT analysis used lifecycle estimates to question the green credentials of electric cars, especially heavy ones.
Interesting. Do you have the link for that report? Ricardo are one of the main players in green/hybrid transport so somewhat surprising that they're effectively downplaying their own products.
Sure.

Again...... those options will mainly only apply if you live in a City or Town.

Cant have it all, if you want to live in peace and quiet you cant expect a load of transport infrastructure and you also cant expect to go on destroying the environment.

This topic has been discussed many times before on this forum and many forum members seemed of the opinion that pedestrians had the right to walk out in front of Cyclists, Buses and Cars etc without checking the road to see if it was safe to do so and if run over, then it would not be the fault of the pedestrian but would be instead the fault of the cyclist or driver of the motor vehicle !!

Does anyone know how much it cost to top up an electric car in the UK. I have only seen Tesla charging station here in Oz and they are mostly in major centres and are free.

Evidently, working out basics sums is not a strong point on this site e.g 60 times 14 pence comes to £8.40 not £7.80 !!
''Cost to charge an electric car at home
Charging an electric car at home costs about £7.80 for a full charge and is the most convenient and cost-effective way to keep your car fully charged. Most drivers will charge their electric car overnight, waking up to a full battery every morning.

Average domestic electricity rate is about 14p per kWh.
Fully charging a 60kWh electric car will cost about £7.80 and give you about 200 miles of range.
Find out more about the home charging options available and how fast they charge your car.''

Thanx spike...Given the cost of sale to establish a charging station I cant see these charging stations providing a reasonable return on investment for private investors.? Technology needs a big kick along to be a viable green option over here given the distances people have to travel...

I agree re the ROI for private investors

I don't think the invisible hand of the market is going to solve our climate change issues - if anything, it might make them worse. I suspect "society" (if such a thing survives) is going to have to take a hand.
