P&O Ferries

Post by Long slender neck »

All staff made redundant apparently, all ships stuck in port.

Not only that, but they will be using agency staff to operate their fleet and have suggested that redundant staff can apply to those agencies.

How is that even legal?

Some reports that the longer-term plan is to replace all UK staff with cheaper foreign labour. RMT union are intending on occupying the ships in protest. Good.

Are they trying to work like cruise lines who employ the majority of staff from poorer countries? Presumably staff live on board?

I thought N Kaufmans 1990 book updated his 1974 book where he said
P&O had something to do with our name to they had nothing to do with
our name as it was Orient steam shipping company who our guy worked for .

Possibly. I think they're now owned by a Saudi consortium who may not have received the Levelling Up memo. No doubt we can expect the government to intervene at any moment as this clearly goes against what Brexit was supposed to deliver. I suspect the Minister for Brexit Opportunities will be fumin'.

Correction.

P&O is not owned by a Saudi consortium. It's owned by DP World which, via a holding company, is under the direct control of the Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE.

And he's just done this to UK workers.

I took a cruise once , about 5 years ago from Tilbury to Hull, left Sat Morning , full board with evening meal and entertainment and free coach back for £65 pp. Was cheaper than when I went up to see the O’s play them.
That was a good day let us in their club house, very friendly indeed, probably all rugby supporters too.

Talking of Brexit; reminds me of what James Dyson did. Arch Brexiteer and then closed down some factories in this country to outsource in the Far East, and that’s not Southend-on-Sea.

Of course, the P andO workers no longer have the rights that were in place when GB was a member of the EU…

This was sent to me from a union friend. Instructions to the security staff who are supposed to kick the crews off. Can’t vouch for the authenticity but he says the crews are to be replaced by Russians (!) as P&O is 40% owned by Russia.

This is shameful and smacks of a return to the industrial relations of gang masters who think they are untouchable and whose barely concealed threats of violence are disgraceful. These ferry operations play a key role in keeping this Country supplied as well in as holiday plans and the owners’ “we’re going bust otherwise” claims are predictably pathetic and designed to gain leverage with Government. I don’t have much confidence that the owners will be successfully faced up to and made accountable for their intimidation and threats.

What happened is still illegal. People still have those same rights. Stop blaming everything on Brexit.
