True, so maybe we should look at 1-1-8 at least you get the two runners as subs? If employed all players should wear false moustaches.

Nope, not at all. Direct football is fast paced football where the ball is moved quickly forwards. Long ball football is when the ball is moved from back to front quickly using a target man, usually.
Honestly never heard it used in that way. Usually when the commentators say a side is going direct they bring a big lump on and whack it long.
