Re: Worst smells
There used to be a terrible stink all over the Stratford area from the old Yardley soap works.

Re: Worst smells
The first three years of my working life, was spent at The laboratory of The Government Chemist ( 3 of the most enjoyable working years ). One of our functions was to test imported and exported chemicals, to check they were what the importer/exporter said they were. Mercaptans were some of the smelliest Methyl Mercaptan springs to mind- truly evil, I believe modern chemist now call it Methanethiol .

Re: Worst smells
Think that was the Molasses from the tunnel refineries, watched the O's one evening at Charlton and the stench was rotten.
Stood on the big open side terrace and the wind carried the smell right across the ground.

Re: Worst smells
I work in Edinburgh most days and drive past the distillery off West Approach Road and used to hate this smell but it’s grown on me now!Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Tue Jul 02, 2019 2:49 pm In many years past, Edinburgh was known as ''Auld Reekie''

Re: Worst smells
Nothing could be worse than the A13 in summer. The mixture of Beckton gas works, the Northern outfall sewer, Warnes rubber factory, Epicure Pickles, Lawes chemicals and Barking Brassware gave a atmosphere you could chew.
