That is a massive thing to say about car drivers. to generalise car drivers are not aware of dangers is just too stupid for words. Car drivers, generally travel at more than 10 mph have so many other things to focus on, including bikes, and given the state of our roads being careful of potholes just adds to the stuff drivers have to watch put for.

Any biker who spots a pothole late, then Swings out to avoid it, is an idiot. Bikers have a responsibility to be aware of road conditions and signal ( a novel idea for bikers ), be aware of traffic and manoeuvre when safe. They don’t have the right to just pull out and expect everyone else to adjust accordingly. Many bikers in my experience seem to believe the rules of the road do t apply to them.
I'm not convinced these anti cyclistas rants are helping with the campaign to improve road safety for cyclists and car drivers. I drive a lot in my job and would say at least 20% of car drivers are not fit to be on the road.
We could argue about percentages, nobody knows for sure. I agree though, personal experience suggests there are road users not fit to drive. But at least at some point drivers have demonstrated a competency to drive and an understanding of the Highway Code. Any person with a bike can just get out there on the roads of Britain without even knowing the sequence of traffic lights. Then moan about car drivers. Perhaps a competency test for cyclists is overdue.
Your statement about bikers swerving to avoid potholes demonstrates two things. Firstly that you have no idea of the issue of potholes to cyclists (probably causes more broken bones amongst cyclists than cars do) and secondly it is a massive thing to say about cyclists. To generalise about cyslists is just too stupid for words.

Casual cyclists tend to cycle on the flat at c.13mph. As both a cyclist and a driver I'd say cyclists have much more to be aware of at 13mph than car drivers do at 30mph.

Surely the solution is to fix the potholes then.

I hit a pothole down Canning Town High Street (last year) with a car right behind.Bike virtually flew up in the air and how I didn't come off I really don't know.Couldn't see it as it was dark. How the bike didn't fall apart is another mystery as I had just rebuilt it.Luckily my wheels are built for commuting and are virtually bomb proof.

The state of the roads is a truly shocking sight. Without trying to make a political point about it, it is clear that under the Tories our roads have disintegrated to a level comparable that would embarrass most third world countries.

Forgot to say I was riding a fixie at the time which made it even more miraculous.

Yeah reckon the roads are damaged by heavy lorries, buses and pushbikes.

As a cyclist I’m fully aware of the pothole issue, particularly when filled with water so not visible, that plus drain covers not maintained and to some extend drivers who pass inches away. No fun.

But If any biker swerves to avoid a pothole then travelling too fast for his/her own safety if unable to stop or look carefully before avoiding the hazard, Travelling at a speed appropriate to road conditions rather than some preset mph figure is the way to do it. Tedious but safe. Swerving to avoid potholes is just asking for problems, the need to suggests lack of concentration.

It’s been like that for successive governments, all paying lip service to the road users whilst doing very little to fix the problem.

I always cycle wide to try and limit the issue. I hate seeing cyclists hugging the kerb, it’s so bloody dangerous. Sitting out wider also discourages pricks from trying to overtake when they shouldn’t.

At the same point of time you should allow other roads users to move along without having to go up the kerb on the other side of the road!! Bloody cyclists🤣

Glad you are aware of the dangers nutty (I've come off at 23mph because of a burst tyre caused by a filled pothole 35mm deep) , but the thought of coming to a stop every time a potential hazard is spotted is impractical and in some cases more dangerous than moving out. To an extent I do what cream does, just to avoid the worst of it, but that has its own risks.

I don't think it's dangerous mate - you're only talking about 3 foot out, which is what you should allow anyway. Far more dangerous to kerb-hug and swere out at short notice.

Behind a cyclist today going into town. Generally about 2 ft from the kerb so a small queue of cars behind. I guess he needs to ride where he feels safe.

What annoyed me was not the distance from the kerb, perhaps like others he was making sure not to hit potholes, but the fact that he was 15 ft from a cycle lane, built a couple of years ago, allowing cyclists safe passage between the town centre and the industrial area. Clearly signposted, rarely fecking used. Nice and wide, no potholes, away from cars etc.

This is a massive bugbear for me. The opposite side of my road has this cycle lane, built with contributions for factories on a new commercial estate. Yet sodding bikers are too frigging lazy to use the cycle lane. They prefer to block the road and moan about car drivers coming too close.

The road is fairly narrow and any cyclist, whether 2, 3 or 4 ft out, makes it near impossible for cars to safely pass. Especially with traffic islands every few hundred feet, plus a good share of pedestrian crossings and bus stops. Never a quick journey into town, no big deal.

The issue is not with the delays etc but the fact that a bloody good cycle lane rarely gets used.

Narrow roads are the ones you have to stay out wider. Otherwise you get dicks trying to squeeze past in non existent gaps.
