new highway code laws
one of the new rules are cyclist now can by law cycle in the
middle of the lane.
so does that mean that cycle lanes are now deemed redundant
surplus to requirements.
personally I now think that cyclists should have insurance
the same as all road users.
these new rules will now add more fuel to the fire.

Re: new highway code laws
We're adopting rules that are already commonplace in other countries where they prioritise pedestrians and cyclists. Having spent some time in such cities, it does tend to make them nicer places to be.
I suspect it will be worth it in the long run, but it will probably be a painful process to go through. Expect lots of confusion, misunderstandings and temper tantrums.

Only opening doors with the arm furthest from the door is gonna be tricky to remember every time, and pretty impossible to enforce I'd think.

Some drivers are impatient enough when I cycle close to the kerb, god knows what they will be like if I am in middle of lanePrestige Worldwide wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 10:22 amwhy not?Story of O wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 9:47 am I ride a bike, but no way will I cycle in the middle of a lane

Re: new highway code laws
The actual new guidance about how cyclists position themselves is to ride in the centre of the lane on quiet roads, in slower-moving traffic and at the approach to junctions or road narrowings. That should also keep at least half a metre away from the kerb on busy roads with faster-moving vehicles.Story of O wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 11:16 amSome drivers are impatient enough when I cycle close to the kerb, god knows what they will be like if I am in middle of lanePrestige Worldwide wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 10:22 amwhy not?Story of O wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 9:47 am I ride a bike, but no way will I cycle in the middle of a lane
I think it will be a step-change for some cyclists in their behaviour, and could risk some pretty nasty reactions from ignorant motorists. But it's just one of those things that, when it becomes standard practice, everyone will adjust to. Having cycled through some French and Dutch towns really highlights how far ahead they are then we are here, and how much better it is.

Re: new highway code laws
Cyclists should be insured. If you want to be a cycling club member then you have to have 3rd party insurance. Joining British Cycling for £28 a year gives you that cover. Its probably only needed where cyclists come into contact with pedestrians - or a cycle makes contact with a stationary vehicle.greyhound wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 9:37 am one of the new rules are cyclist now can by law cycle in the

If I was a cyclist I'd rather be a live pacifist than a dead anarchist. I just hope these staunch cyclists don't suddenly become traffic police.
And what about cyclists riding on pavements that have no makings and also these invalid carriages?
Another problem is that cyclists are unidentifiable if they do something wrong and run away.

I don’t get why motorists turn full Jeremy Clarkson as soon as they even hear the words cyclist or Lycra.

Important point. I have no issue with changes that protect cyclists.WickfordO wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 1:44 pm If I was a cyclist I'd rather be a live pacifist than a dead anarchist. I just hope these staunch cyclists don't suddenly become traffic police.

But I do hope it creates better habits from cyclists too. Far too many have little regard for pedestrians, ride where they should not and feel they have the right to ignore traffic lights.
I’m sure now that changes will make life safer for them they (some) themselves will become more considerate to others.

This is about protecting vulnerable cyclists from inconsiderate, impatient bumhole motorists.

There's already laws against cyclists riding on the pavement and running red lights thoughDohnut wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 3:17 pmImportant point. I ride on the pavement because you're risking your life riding in the road. People taking their kids to ride in the road must be high.

Re: new highway code laws
Up our way they stole some road space to make a cycle lane on one of the main roads. The petition demanding its immediate removal is stuck on the 500ish mark.Prestige Worldwide wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 4:15 pm I ride on the pavement because you're risking your life riding in the road. There is already a cycle path built on the old Greenock to Glasgow railway they can use. First they came for the railroad. Then they came for the main road. Next they will be angrily demanding cycle lanes on the Motorways.
