We're adopting rules that are already commonplace in other countries where they prioritise pedestrians and cyclists. Having spent some time in such cities, it does tend to make them nicer places to be.

I suspect it will be worth it in the long run, but it will probably be a painful process to go through. Expect lots of confusion, misunderstandings and temper tantrums.

The wording is a suggestion rather than law from what i can see.

The actual new guidance about how cyclists position themselves is to ride in the centre of the lane on quiet roads, in slower-moving traffic and at the approach to junctions or road narrowings. That should also keep at least half a metre away from the kerb on busy roads with faster-moving vehicles.

I think it will be a step-change for some cyclists in their behaviour, and could risk some pretty nasty reactions from ignorant motorists. But it's just one of those things that, when it becomes standard practice, everyone will adjust to. Having cycled through some French and Dutch towns really highlights how far ahead they are then we are here, and how much better it is.

Cyclists should be insured. If you want to be a cycling club member then you have to have 3rd party insurance. Joining British Cycling for £28 a year gives you that cover. Its probably only needed where cyclists come into contact with pedestrians - or a cycle makes contact with a stationary vehicle.

There's already laws against cyclists riding on the pavement and running red lights though

Up our way they stole some road space to make a cycle lane on one of the main roads. The petition demanding its immediate removal is stuck on the 500ish mark.

There is already a cycle path built on the old Greenock to Glasgow railway they can use. First they came for the railroad. Then they came for the main road. Next they will be angrily demanding cycle lanes on the Motorways.
