The government has the met where it wants it - under its thumb. The commissioner is damaged goods and will do anything the government says in a reciprocal deal for giving her a new contract.

I suspect that the Met's lack of willingness to investigate clear breaches of the law where they were actually present has done much, much more to undermine them amonst those who generally respect the police (and the challenges they face) than the actions of individual officers which always make the front pages.

Good point. Even when they do nothing they prove beyond doubt they are not fit for purpose.

Yep. Even if what they are doing now is appropriate, their conduct so far has undermined their credibility and any confidence the public can have in them. That is poor leadership.
