Personally I think Labour need go win Scotland back to stand a chance of being in government.
England is more Conservative and the SNP are doing a good job of keeping the Conservatives in power thus ensuring no independence for Scotland.
Labour can not do any deals with the SNP because it would strengthen the SNP and ironically the only way the SNP can stop the conservatives is to lose.
But everyones self serving nature probits this and labour can not afford an independent scotland so that is why I think they need to win scotland 1st.

Or - simply introduce punitive land / property taxes on all assets NOT owned by onshore, tax-paying entities with full transparency. Say, 10% of value p.a. Failure to pay means the asset is forfeit to the state.

Well, quite. But while they cannot take the physical assets away, they can exert considerable control and influence over commercial and residential tenancies, because current company law and landlord and tenant law does not provide any additional layers of protection.
