The Return of Bandoff - Christmas Film Edition

Post by StillSpike »

Do you know, around about the time that the fat tub of monkey spunk was breaking out the Camembert and Shiraz in May 2020, we were much more productively deciding which was the best Comedy film of all time (it was Life of Brian, pipping Airplane in the final).

Maybe we might like to reprise Bandoff for the Festive period - and in keeping with the Season, I thought we might want to do Christmas movies (and YES - Die Hard IS a Christmas movie - them's the rules).

Suggestions welcome - here are a few from me

It's a Wonderful Life
Muppet Christmas Carol
Miracle on 34th St (1947)
Home Alone
Scrooged.

Trading Places
Bad Santa
Gremlins
Planes, Trains & Automobiles (okay, it's Thanksgiving, but it's all about trying to get home through the snow to be with your family, so translates to Christmas in the UK)

And Die Hard.

Last night I managed to successfully argue that the first Lethal Weapon movie was also a Christmas film, so that's in too.

Pray forgive me for being a grinch, but I am not a lover of Christmas Films as a genre. Seeing a good film at Christmas is different, however.

Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (pretty new one we watched and enjoyed last year)
A Boy Called Christmas - this year's Sky production -

OK - if needed both can play the San Marino of one of the groups

Also - Where Eagles Dare - really stretching to call it a Christmas movie, but there is a lot of snow in it

Ha!! If that's the criteria Dr Zhivago is a shoo-in.

I am happy to participate in this as a mild diversion from the misery of day to day existence BUT I'm just saying now that any result other than a landslide win for It's A Wonderful Life (one of the best movies ever made in any genre) will be incorrect.

You also need to include both Holiday Inn (the film in which the song White Christmas first appeared - 1942, I think) and the movie White Christmas in which the most famous Xmas song of all time also appears.

We shall test them all in the public crucible of Bandoff and that shall decide which is the best Christmas film (even if it's not a Christmas film - fyi I'm considering adding The Battle of the Bulge" now, based on my own loose interpretation of the rules)

I don’t think that is a loose interpretation at all. Surely the Battle of the Bulge is never more relevant than over the Christmas Period, look at Santa - Fat Bast*rd.
