I agree Tuffers. COVID positive in the previous 28 days. I don’t like using personal stories to back up facts , but I will in this case. My mother in law was in a home at the height of COVID in 2019 . Despite not being tested , she died and COVID was listed as the cause of death. She had dementia and visiting restrictions meant that she could not see her family. She was 86 and locked in her room. She simply gave up on life and died of loneliness. She won’t be the only case where COVID was used as cause of death

Almost two years in and we still can’t level any blame at the government? Right oh.
No. I can blame this government for mistakes that were made at times through this Pandemic. But I can also offer praise where it is due. And some praise is due. What I won’t do is blame them for the spread of COVID.

A sad event ,
However your story proves that your earlier comment about all
Who die of covid in the uk is classed as a Covid death .

Plenty like your Mother in Law who werent tested & plenty of others who would have
spent more than a month in a coma ( after 28 day tests ) are NOT INCLUDED in the
UK governments figures .
They were when we were behind Italy & Spain in early 2020.
Then when the UK went top of the death lists , we woke up one
day & the figure had miraculously dropped from 60,000 to 48,000 .

More likely to be close on 200k dead & not the reported 145 k

I wondered at 1st if these people had come back to life.
Then i learnt it was manipulation of figures by the Story Party .

I assume your Mother in Law died of covid in 2020 & not 2019 as you stated .

Either way may she Rest in Peace.

Pretty sure this NU variant will surge ahead with a flurry of activity then quickly tail off as it loses interest.

Is this saying that around 10 days after it emerged, it accounted for 90% of cases in south africa?

I think so, but across a relatively low number of samples. Therefore the true picture will emerge over the next couple of weeks. I'm not religious, but I'm tempted to start praying that this is a false alarm, because if it isn't...

I'm getting a real sense of dread about this. The rapid reaction to the travel list and how Javid is sending out some very clear signals indicate that they're proper spooked.

If this is what it looks like, I think this just about kills off any semblance of hope we had been clinging onto that our previous way of life was recoverable in the short to medium term. This could lead to de-globalisation at a scale not last seen since the First World War.

It's not back to square one. Vaccines will still be somewhat effective, we know they work and they can be updated for this strain relatively quickly. We've proven we can roll out these things very quickly as well.

Also, I may be botching the description of this, but supposedly there's only so many mutations to the spike protein that the virus can do. So even if this one is effective at escaping current vaccines, once we have updated our jabs, the virus will have less room to evolve.

It'd be massively frustrating to be set back again after we've become used to relatively normality, and further lockdowns may happen, but we're not where we were in April 2020. *

Yep, I'm on board with that. If I was to summarise what I understand about this variant so far, it's this:

It's definitely not good, as all the sources I trust to be proportionate are concerned by this more than numerous other variants that have emerged. But it's still too early to say if it looks bad, or really is bad. So, there's still hope.

Totally agree. I've been calling for face coverings to be brought back for several weeks now, but I fear a lot will just not follow the guidance.
