Name That Album

Post by Max B Gold »

On a whim I have been revisiting Simple Minds first album "Life in a Day" which I bought back in 1979 and liked a lot.

I didn't take to the next one "Real to Reel Cacophany" because it was, well, cack. As was almost everything they recorded after that.

Really enjoying "Life in a Day". Are there any other albums from the olden days that you have gone back to and liked.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon. Yes I know that's cliched but tbh, up until recently I never really took a lot of notice of the Floyd.

Led Zeppelin - the first 4 albums. Songs of Leonard Cohen. Anything by the Velvet Underground.

The Beast Inside by Inspiral Carpets. It deserves to be recognised as an all time great and an equal of many of the other so-called classics from that era.

The first 4 Simple Minds albums have been played by myself countless times, with Empires and Dance my favourite. Saw them first promoting Real to Real Cacophony but after only playing 2 songs from their back catalogue while promoting their breakthrough album I stopped.

While getting grief from some idiots at the Marquee in 1980, during Pleasantly Disturbed Jim Kerr kept offering his mic stand to them when singing "Take it from me", one guy tried and Jim smashed the stand in his face. Bloke went past me with claret over his face, totally deserved.

Hocus Pocus - Focus. Every few years I go back to it and play it, remember seeing them whilst very pissed at the Sundown and have always enjoyed the music and the reminders of my largely misspent youth.

It’s one I’ve always tried to get round to as I love a lot of stuff from the era but I just didn’t get the hype. I tried so hard but it was mainly extended whining for 6 mins.

1st album I ever bought was Cosmos Factory (Creedence) and I still love it (and can play the original 51 year old copy). Not really gone back to it though as it's never been far from my playlist.

I have a couple of thousand records so I'm always listening to something. I buy a lot of the records I liked when I was a teenager but didn't have the money to buy. Tonight it's Wings Over America. Like most triples it could be a very good double, but I'm enjoying it immensely.

Your choice reminds me when Jeremy Beadle announced that he owned 27,000 books and somebody said it was like Douglas Bader owning 27,000 pairs of shoes.

Try it, you might like it. Moved on to the reissue of Lewis Taylor's epic debut album. Sounding great.

If I am allowed another that I go back to regularly is Half Man Half Biscuit’s Back in the DHSS. Priceless songs and references from the era. Seen at the Hope and Anchor Islington, again very pissed. Often adopted the Len Ganley stance in Jelks’.

I played Waiting by Fun Boy Three again a few years back and enjoyed it far more than I thought I would.

Went through a Krautrock phase during early lockdown and Ege Bamyasi by Can from 1972 sits well with contemporary stuff from the likes of Black Midi.

The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails still amazes whenever I give it a spin.
