Referee performances for the last 2 home matches

Post by brentwoodo »

It was interesting to note that the referees for the last 2 home matches have been booed off the pitch and with most people commenting how bad both refs were, there doesn't appear to be much comment on here on the subject. The officials performances on both occasions very much reminded me of our days in the National League when more often than not, the referees where completely incompetent.

Strangely enough, the refereeing pattern in both matches against Mansfield and Walsall were very similar and indeed, many people around me during the early part of both the games were actually commenting on how refreshing it was to see how much the referees were letting go rather than blowing up for every minor foul. The problem was that both sets of players pushed things further and further (seemingly more the away players) and the referees just did not know where to draw the line with both matches seemingly ending up almost a free for all. The problem also on both days was that the officials seemed totally incapable of identifying the dark side tactics being used on our players targeted and identified as dangerous. In the main, Harry Smith who particularly against Mansfield had one player up his backside, permanently holding him down by the shirt and opponent in front backing in and treading on his toes.

Most people in the crowd could see the underhand tactics being used in pushing, blocking runs and shirt pulling but again, the officials just seemed incapable of penalising these tactics, the only time the cards came out was when our players protested at the treatment they were receiving.

It is of course appreciated that referees have been given a directive this season to let a bit more physical stuff go but I seriously think, the un-penalised treatment our players were receiving was a major factor in the O's not getting more positive results. Of course, you can't blame the opponents for using their tactics as they were getting away it and getting results themselves. I fully appreciate that the art of refereeing is often a near impossible job and they can't get every decision right but the last two officials did not seriously understand a large part of the game and we paid a price for this.

I'm seriously looking forward to watch FGR tomorrow turning up to play and it'll be interesting to see how we perform. I am also hoping to watch a match refereed at more more acceptable standard!! OTO's

Kenny Jackett has been very kind with his remarks to these two incompetent refs, can you imagine Ferguson or Mourinho being so charitable ?

I haven’t heard of any edict being issued, but it appears to me that League 2 Refereeing is totally different to Premier League .
Some foul play in L2 isn’t penalised, whereas in the PL Refs seem much stricter.

Two decisions that really baffled me on Saturday .Firstly Smyth cleverly turned his man and was through in on goal yet the Ref pulled the game back for a foul on the Walsall player . When did they change the rules that say you can't turn your man like that . Secondly I think it was Sotiriou who got taken out by a challenge yet it was the Walsall player who got the free kick . I started to wonder if I was watching a different game to the Ref.

The first foul by Smyth - the ref classed it as obstruction by Smyth, as the ball was not in his playing area. I thought this was ridiculously harsh, given the amount of physical stuff he’d let go earlier but I can see what he blew up for.

The second one by Ruel - their bloke went through the side which the ref ignored, then Ruel hacked their player down as he was laid on the floor. It was 100% a foul on Ruel but as the ref didn’t give that, he was right to give the foul thereafter.

There is definitely a pattern emerging and I’m sure we’ll see the same again tonight. Teams come here up for a fight - when you look at the size of our starting line up and Jacketts reputation, it’s not surprising - the ref let’s a lot go, crowd gets on officials back, our players then retaliate and get pulled up for it.

I’m not sure if it’s down to bias (surely not everyone can hate us?), us as a club not understanding the ‘new’ interpretation of the laws, or just incompetence from the officials. There were loads of such incidents by Walsall on Saturday, the only one I thought we got away with was when Wood flattened their right winger and hauled him down as he was away. They got the foul but wood should have been booked too.
