I'm sure you know this already, but maybe it bears repeating: Kaepernick started kneeling during the national anthem as a protest against the disproportionate use of police violence (including deadly violence) against black people in America. That's not a left-wing cause.

The reason he kneels (he used to sit down) is that as military veteran told him he considered it to be a respectful form of protest in front of the flag.

So what we have here is a gesture that's supposed to symbolise solidarity in the context of a society in which various forms of racial abuse are still prevalent, and was chosen specifically on the grounds that it's humble/respectful to the point that even a soldier who fought for the flag the guy knelt in front of considered it so.

We understand that and I can respect people’s right to use the knee as a symbol of what they believe in.

So long as those who feel taking the knee is right for them equally respect those with different opinions and having such opinions does not make them racist.
