A friend of my brother was an avid Spurs fan and he used to take me along with his own brother to see Spurs regularly at their home games. That was the first season that Greaves played for Spurs after coming back from his time in Italy. I was at the first game he played for Spurs against Blackpool and he scored a hat trick on his debut for Spurs, he was simply amazing. It was the promotion season of 1961-62 for the Os, so my dad started to take me to see Leyton Orient instead of Spurs. Must admit that I missed seeing the fabulous Spurs team for a while, especially Jimmy Greaves who in his pomp was the best inside forward of most any era.

Last time I saw him play was for Chelmsford City against Walthamstow Avenue at Green Pond Road in 1976/77 season.
I recall that he came on - scored - then went off. He never lost his scoring ability!

Sadly "The G Men" are no more....Alan Gilzean passed away in 2018 and today we lost Jimmy Greaves (I saw them play together thank God) May they both rest in peace.

Clearly a very special player, though I never saw him play live, and was a decent media figure as well.

Also needs to be remembered, that he overcame his raging alcoholism too, and did not lift a single drink after 1977. No doubt he would have been long since dead if he had carried on.
The bloke had guts as well as talent too.

Jimmy Greaves always seemed to be able to dribble past goalkeepers and then score. This isn't seen much today. Do people think goalkeepers are better, or strikers are less good at dribbling?

Greaves was as good as anyone who played in English football throughout the 1960’s - a genuine all time great- that’s all anyone needs to know really. RIP Jimmy, you played a blinder.

I disagree. They catch very few criminals. The helicopter thing on the TV shows where they track criminals from the air and direct their colleagues in on the criminals is just propaganda.
