Re: Jimmy Greaves RIP
A friend of my brother was an avid Spurs fan and he used to take me along with his own brother to see Spurs regularly at their home games. That was the first season that Greaves played for Spurs after coming back from his time in Italy. I was at the first game he played for Spurs against Blackpool and he scored a hat trick on his debut for Spurs, he was simply amazing. It was the promotion season of 1961-62 for the Os, so my dad started to take me to see Leyton Orient instead of Spurs. Must admit that I missed seeing the fabulous Spurs team for a while, especially Jimmy Greaves who in his pomp was the best inside forward of most any era.Chicken Dhansak wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 4:10 pm Fabulous player, I can clearly remember the way he would dribble around defenders like they were rooted to the spot. Once seen
never forgotten.
RIP Greavesie.

So you're really a Spurs fan. Re: Jimmy Greaves RIP
A good article here about Jimmy Greaves on the BBC website.
Jimmy Greaves: One of football's most popular and enduring figures By Phil McNulty, Chief football writer.
Jimmy Greaves, who has died aged 81, will be remembered as a prodigy, pioneer and pundit as well as one of the greatest natural goalscorers English football has ever produced. Greaves' glittering career at club level with Chelsea, AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United was matched by his feats for England as he remains fourth in the list of all-time goalscorers behind Wayne Rooney, Sir Bobby Charlton and Gary Lineker with 44 goals in 57 games. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/32581203

Re: Jimmy Greaves RIP
Last time I saw him play was for Chelmsford City against Walthamstow Avenue at Green Pond Road in 1976/77 season.
I recall that he came on - scored - then went off. He never lost his scoring ability!

Sadly "The G Men" are no more....Alan Gilzean passed away in 2018 and today we lost Jimmy Greaves (I saw them play together thank God) May they both rest in peace.

Re: Jimmy Greaves RIP
As much as the boomers rave about him, I can’t see how he’d have been anywhere near as prolific in the modern game.

Re: Jimmy Greaves RIP
RIP.
Clearly a very special player, though I never saw him play live, and was a decent media figure as well.
Also needs to be remembered, that he overcame his raging alcoholism too, and did not lift a single drink after 1977. No doubt he would have been long since dead if he had carried on.
The bloke had guts as well as talent too.

Re: Jimmy Greaves RIP
Jimmy Greaves always seemed to be able to dribble past goalkeepers and then score. This isn't seen much today. Do people think goalkeepers are better, or strikers are less good at dribbling?

Re: Jimmy Greaves RIP
The 'boomers' rave about him because they saw him and judge him in the era in which he played.. You didn't, so maybe that's your problem.Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 8:10 pm As much as the boomers rave about him, I can’t see how he’d have been anywhere near as prolific in the modern game.
And therefore, your statement in the above can be defined as a bit of a nonsense.

Re: Jimmy Greaves RIP
Really don’t see why we have to have this pointless argument every time a great from a previous era passes away and can only assume it’s some kind of age related baiting. Greaves was as good as anyone who played in English football throughout the 1960’s - a genuine all time great- that’s all anyone needs to know really. RIP Jimmy, you played a blinder.Chief crazy horse wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 2:18 pmThe 'boomers' rave about him because they saw him and judge him in the era in which he played.. Quite right, it's pointless. I suppose you only have to laugh really. And your bit about it probably being some kind of age related baiting is spot on.redintheface wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 2:30 pmReally don’t see why we have to have this pointless argument every time a great from a previous era passes away and can only assume it’s some kind of age related baiting. I disagree. They catch very few criminals. The helicopter thing on the TV shows where they track criminals from the air and direct their colleagues in on the criminals is just propaganda.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Tue Sep 21, 2021 4:05 pmGood comeback !

Oh and now that a respectful few days have passed since Jim passed to the great Lizard Lounge in the sky can I just say that his patronising of scottish football on Saint & Greavsie made my blood boil.
