I remember Sue Barker winning something once.
I think it was a career hosting Question of Sport, retiring poor old David Coleman of his slot. He had a haircut like Ralph Coates.

Re: Emma Raducanu
Surely it's up to her to her to say if she's British or not? National identity is personal. Makes more sense to identify with where you've lived most of your life than with your families history.ComeOnYouOs wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:49 pmSome of the Windrush people had lived here over 40 years, but they were deemed not to be British and deported.Currywurst and Chips wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:17 pmOther than the fact she's lived here for 90% of her lifeComeOnYouOs wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 8:50 pm How is she British?

So she's multinational, but none of its British.

This is all a bit weird, isn’t it. The usual right wing bigots fawning all over an immigrant because she’s successful, attractive and not that foreign-looking.

It’s not just the right, the BBC are so breathless the last 48 hours they will need the smelling salts. Is she British? No, not really but she is a product of globalisation and people like me better get used to it. We have increased the population of this country by 15m in 20 years, are they British. What does it mean to be British anymore anyway.

I know bugger all about tennis but given ‘our’ history in the sport, and how well she comes across, it’s hardly surprising she’s newsworthy, is it?Beradogs wrote: ↑Sat Sep 11, 2021 8:44 am It’s not just the right, the BBC are so breathless the last 48 hours they will need the smelling salts. But of course she’s not British. Not that it matters one way or the other.

How is she not British? She's a British coruscating, It's the country she has lived in the majority of her life, and has the greatest affinity with its people and customs.Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Sat Sep 11, 2021 9:41 amI know bugger all about tennis but given ‘our’ history in the sport, and how well she comes across, it’s hardly surprising she’s newsworthy, is it?Beradogs wrote: ↑Sat Sep 11, 2021 8:44 am It’s not just the right, the BBC are so breathless the last 48 hours they will need the smelling salts. Contestants in this years US open featured the worlds best male and female tennis players Including the current women's world number one player, Ashleigh Barty who was beaten in the third round by Shelby Rogers of the USA who was in turn beaten in the 4th round by Emma Raducanu which took Emma into the semi final, which she also won. Good luck to Emma in the final today !

BTW: Her opponent tonight is a Canadian (born there) to an Ecuadorian father and Singaporean mother. The father has gone out of his way to stress he and his whole family are Canadian, as he appreciates that he arrived there with nothing to offer and what Canada gave him, he has then been able to offer on to his daughter.

Yeah her pigment looks exactly like that of native white Brits
Wonder if those on the left disputing her Englishness would have the same opinion if she was an Afghan refugee whose parents fled here when she was a baby
So weird

Re: Emma Raducanu
What a sad thread - an 18 year old super talent, making history and the thread deteriorates to this. No doubt the same sh-ite elsewhere on other social media forums.
She will win tonight and deserves all the accolades coming.

Re: Emma Raducanu
If you dont feel British, then that is your own personal choice. Emma has lived in the UK for most of her life and regards her lifestyle and national identity as British, that is good enough. Let us concentrate on her great skills as a tennis player and of being a thoroughly nice young lady.tuffers#1 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 11, 2021 11:50 amive lived here 95 % of my life & im notCurrywurst and Chips wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:17 pmOther than the fact she's lived here for 90% of her lifeComeOnYouOs wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 8:50 pm How is she British?

The two finalists tonight remind me of the thrill that the Williams sisters brought to the game when they broke through 20 years ago

Re: Emma Raducanu
If she can keep this standard up she’s destined to be the world’s number 1. It’s impressive she hasn’t even lost a set yet in this tournament. I don’t really know much about tennis or anything about her final opponent except that she’s also a teenager. Obviously she must also be very talented to get where she is so I’m expecting a cracking final .

Re: Emma Raducanu
Mad that Britain hasn't had a slam winner let alone finalist for 44 years in the Womens game
Hopefully she maintains the levels she's been playing as the women's game is there for the taking now.

Saxon, Roman, Norman, Stig of the dump?
So any of our sportspeople who have different pigment to what you call a native brit shouldn't be called British?
