But surely there must be a surge of pure-bred Brits wanting to rightfully take back the jobs that Johnny Foreigner has stolen from them over the years?
I'm sure there are, but are employers going to train them and pay a decent wage? From what I've read, they prefer to employ from abroad, keep wages as low as possible.

As a remainer, do you support the race to the bottom the eu enabled? I guess you don't really care, so long as its only the working class jobs affected.
Blimey, where did all that old bollox come from. Yes, maybe this shortage of drivers will force wages up. That in turn will force prices up for products on the supermarket shelves. Fine with me - you OK with that?

Secondly, the driver shortage wasn't really hard to anticipate after Brexit was it? Hardly surprising that many foreign drivers went home. Then the government even made it more difficult for foreign drivers by changing the tax rules so they get paid less. So just what has the Government been doing to mitigate the driver shortage and all the other product shortages that will come as a direct result. Answer - sweet fanny adams - cos they haven't got a frickin clue.

How long do truck drivers have left before their jobs are automated? 10 years? 20 at best.

More than 20. The A.I. required to make automated HGVs on most roads a feasible option still requires substantial development.

But it was the Government who, by their actions, created the driver shortage. They did nothing, apart from saying post-Brexit would be great, to mitigate the impact of the shortage.

It could be argued that the lorry companies created the shortage by relying on too many foreign drivers.

Yeah, but that's a piss poor argument though. What percentage of "foreigns" do you think any company should have?

Well, not many companies seek the most expensive workforce available.

Lol this is such a blind spot for the left. Every time this argument happens they either end up defending corporate cuntiness or make prejudiced remarks about Brits being lazier than foreigners

Anyway I’ve benefitted from the labour shortage because there’s nobody working in my local Pret anymore, so I can walk in and pick up my morning coffee and sandwich without paying

Build some goods railways for container trains to trundle along through the night on.
Much more sense than HS2 knocking twenty minutes of a trip up North
Each train can take the place of 20 or 30 lorries, make the roads a damn sight safer too.
No doubt far more environmentally friendly too, makes me wonder how strong the road haulage lobby is?
Went on the A1 and A14 this morning and the reduction in HGV traffic was noticeable by its absence.
Nice change not having two or three lorries running parallel for miles or having them suddenly pull out.

Yesterday I drove along the A14, and the A1, and the amount of lorries was breathtaking. I've never seen so many.
They drive me mad, particularly when they take up both lanes in the A1, which is a 2 lane road.
Getting them off the road would be a major plus, and environmentally beneficial

A simple law restricting then to the inside lane might be the easiest and cheapest solution

Has nobody had a chortle at “Beefy” Botham slipping into the Randy Andy role of UK Trade Envoy? That’s a Brexit Dividend right there :D

It’s like the End of Empire Days when the most useless offspring of the Great & Good were packed off to the far corners of Blighty’s Realms so they couldn’t screw up at home (see FILTH).

In a few decades, the history books will show how ridiculous brexit was.
To leave a trade block during which we had the best standard of living we had ever had in this country, was so stupid.
I hope all you brexiteers are happy with your sovereignty, because you'll have not much else, including food.
I'm so angry, that the thickos of this country have ruined everything
