Laurie Cunningham

Post by Kent »

Commemorating the late, great Laurie Cunningham (RIP) (8 March 1956 – 15 July 1989) who played for Orient between 1974-1977.

Later playing for West Bromwich Albion in the top flight of British football then Real Madrid (the first British player to do so) in Spain and finally earning six full caps for England (after becoming the first black player to represent England at under-21 level in 1977) the exciting and incredibly talented Laurie helped change the face of British football and inspired generations of black players.

Recall seeing him score his first ever goal, the winner in a 2-1 v Southampton final game of the season. He got the ball on the half way line and simply ran away from the defenders, calmly slotting it by the keeper (Coronation Gardens end), he was clearly something special.

I would have loved to see what he could have done with one of these modern balls.

Yes, So was I. I recall Laurie nut-megging Saint's Peter Rodrigues midway inside their half before slotting home.

He's one of main reasons I fell in love with Orient...and there's no f**tball without the O's.

Laurie was my Hero at the time and he is forever etched in my memory. I was sad to see him move on, but the cream always goes to the top.

I'm a bit sad for those who never got to see him play for the O's, but let's hope Kenny can bring back some fast attacking forward play to Brisbane Road, in Laurie's spirit, and rekindle the excitement of my early years.

The day Laurie got sold to WBA I was doing my paper round and I remember deciding not to deliver the Daily Express to No 2 Clare Road E11 which was the last house on my round - because I wanted to keep the paper.
Sorry about that
I believe I owe them 5p as I did not keep the paper so cannot now return it

In this case it’s predictive text gone awry

In most cases I would say at least three pints constitutes a proper round.

But I could always check on Yahoo if you like
