Re: DJ reportedly going to Mansfield
This is a massive loss to us. I'm not sure where many of the above comments have come from, but it must be bravado
No one really replaces a 20 goal a season striker easily.
When your getting outbid by The Stags, something's wrong
I really thought he would stay, seeing as a new highly thought of manager has come in, and the club have voiced their intentions regarding promotion.
I guessed he would be peed of last season having played under two rookie managers as a lone striker and so isolated, but as I said a new experienced manager would have changed all that.
I don't mind admitting, at this moment, I'm really gutted.
Johnson's a really good striker when played properly, and I hope we don't find that , when we play Mansfield.

We didn’t “let him go” he chose to move on at the end of his contract nothing we can do if he wants to go.Monkey Boy wrote: ↑Thu Jun 10, 2021 4:39 pm One step forward two steps back, let your top scorer go to a rival club, not a L1 or Championship club but hey we’re going to sign Sears apparently so don’t panic![]()

Things happen for a reason maybe I wanted to go but there are better players out there than him good luck
to him but I hope we finished higher than them

Am sorry to see DJ go, he did well for us, felt for him second half of season for he had little support, we simply didn’t play to his strengths.
So of the five offered contracts who haven’t signed – we’re beyond the 28 days and the first of them has gone, just feels that doesn’t bode well for the other four remaining.

No it isn’t. He holds the ball up and brings people into play really well considering his size. Very good finisher at this level too.

The club have probably offered Micky mouse terms to our current players, hence the reason most haven’t signed.
The Keeper and DJ were the only ones worth keeping out of the established pros.

You know you don’t have to live in the same town/city your football team is located right?

Re: DJ reportedly going to Mansfield
So it turns out Ling's loose lips were giving us early sight of his departure after all.
After the January injury saga he wasn't the same player, cut a frustrated figure who looked like he didn't want to be here. At 28 I do wonder if he's had his "Mooney moment" and won't replicate that form again.
I'm hearing he's made comments about wanting to join a side that makes chances, I make him right. Our style of football last season was garbage and the goals he scored were mostly from scraps.
Hoping Wilkinson goes next so we can start afresh with players who are committed to the club.

Re: DJ reportedly going to Mansfield
His all round play was shocking but never know a player to score close the amount he did and be waved goodbye with a ‘meh’. I get it though.
As said, it showed that he was stopped from moving in jan. he is also a good finisher and with decent service, in the right system could surpass last years total.
Will hold fire on if this is a good thing or bad once I see his replacement

Re: DJ reportedly going to Mansfield
Can't help thinking that if KJ had wanted him we would have stumped up what he was asking for. As everybody is saying, he was on fire in the first half of the season but 3-20 after his injury wasn't good enough.
Easy to see why Clough came in for him as, of the top L2 scorers last season, Doyle has gone up to L1, Mullin, even if he doesn't resign for Cambridge ain't staying in L2, Vaughan has retired, a couple are under contract and only Johnson and Oldham's McAleny were available. It didn't do Johnson any harm scoring two of his 2nd half of the season goals against Mansfield either.

At least I won’t have to listen to Dave Victor calling him “Superstar DJ” any more. On that basis alone I’m f*cking delighted

Thought he was awful when he first joined (even though he had that habit of being in the right place at the right time and scoring tap ins), won me over with his goals last season, with his other habit of sniffing out mistakes and shooting early) but not overly concerned he’s gone. We can do better.

Re: DJ reportedly going to Mansfield
Being too lazy to investigate it all, I could be wrong but the first half of last season is the first time that DJ scored heavily in a decent standard league. His major successes seem have come lower down?
Nobody above FL2 has made a big enough offer to temp him so he stays here with Clough and the Stags. I guess that means he isn't rated by the FL1 clubs as a possible answer to their goal getting needs

He could live in Chesterfield or Lincoln instead.

Re: DJ reportedly going to Mansfield
It’s a loss, not a massive loss by any stretch. Apart from a decent season at Gateshead he has not exactly set the world on fire. He did a job for us. It seems that a combination of injury and sulking meant he didn’t score many more.
I wish him all the best, but if Mansfield was his best option then I think we all know what other clubs thought of him too. Not worth a league 1 shot and goes to another mediocre league 2 club. Will struggle to get double digits again, as someone said earlier he had his Mooney season already.

Re: DJ reportedly going to Mansfield
A funny game, I used to watch Macauley Bonne miss a hatful of chances, that I am sure the more clinical Johnson would have scored. That said if I could have one or the other back it would be Bonne. I accept Bonne is struggling now in the Championship, and may need to head back to the lower divisions, but Bonne could play the lone striker role, and was always a handful. You could knock the ball long to Bonne and the ball might not come straight back. Johnson has had 10 or so clubs in 10 years only playing in the lower divisions. How much Johnson will be missed depends on who replaces him through the door.

It was amazing he scored as much as he did for us. He was being asked to play as a target man and had no support around him. Hopefully his new club will utilise him better
