What's the reporting hierarchy? Will the new Manager report into T&T or Ling? Any interview board will be based on this.

If you listen to the interview on the outlook podcast (approx 1h35 in I think it was)
-Didn't name the candidates
-Said its a 3 step interview Martin Ling->Matt Porter/Danny Macklin -> Kent& Nigel
-Early discussion with agent on possible financials
-Applicants are approaching Orient interested in the project and saying why they want to be part of it. (He felt this was a positive)

As per most of the other articles it seems the candidates are based on the bookmakers favourites - nothing from the club

That is the sensible question, not who does the interview and makes the decision. Ling will be involved for sure. If he was not involved his position would be untenable. The Board will be dealing with Ts and Cs, conduct the interview process and be the final decision makers.

Therein is one of the stumbling blocks. Jackett and Tisdale I would guess want to be in total control of football matters and be owners of their budget. Cutting across Ling’s territory. But there is a compromise. Ling’s role is perhaps more of General Manager and I have little doubt should he step back from his first team football duties, there is plenty to keep him occupied in other areas.

The real dilemma facing the Board and those involved. Doubt Calderwood would create the same issue.

I know many believed that Sam Ling wasn't in the team on merit, but I've not seen any actual evidence that Ling ever interfered with team selection.

Not directly, he won’t. But there will have been self imposed pressure on Ross to play him. Ross owed much to Ling, this will have impacted on his judgement when choosing the team. A sort of owed loyalty thing. Not easy to deal with, I know.

As I have put on the Roy Hodgson post, RH leaving Palace might mean KJ would try for that job!

Ling will no doubt have a major say,

But as businessmen, Travis and Teague will be well versed in making senior appointments for positions that they personally have little expertise in. The CV and references will contain all they need to know about the credentials of the interviewee. They will be assessing the character, managerial qualities, personality, leadership qualities. After Fletcher, Travis admitted he should have got more involved.

So it is quite possible that Ling’s role in this appointment may be reduced. In fact, I suspect most of the negotiations are taking place directly with the Board.
Think back to your Business Days when you were IT Director. When you appointed an IT manager, did the Board interview and make that decision for you? Or was it your responsibility to recruit and appoint the lucky person reporting directly into you?
Look at it from a different perspective. When I was an IT professional, the people interviewing me for senior roles knew naff all about computers, bar doing spreadsheets. But they knew about business, people, personalities, could read a CV and were capable of getting references by way of independent verification.

I was never in 30 years in a senior role, interviewed by an IT expert. They were hiring me because that’s what they wanted, not what they had. Some may find it strange, but it is in fact routine for senior appointments.

Junior posts may well be interviewed by their boss-to-be. They not having the opportunity to create a long working history.

It’s the way it works. That you don’t understand is down to you.
But let’s say there was a Director of IT employed by the company interviewing you, who you would be reporting in to directly.

You would expect that person to interview you and have the final say on whether to employ you or not, wouldn’t you?

Give over.

No disrespect to Porter but he’s just a fan like the rest of us. He has as much football knowledge as us, or Travis or Teague.

This will be Lingys call, and rightfully so.
Dont you get it?

Bad appointment - Lings choice and all his fault
Good appointment - someone else must have recruited, Ling to receive zero credit, unless manager turns out to be a failure, in which case, see above.

So people in important, senior roles get jobs based on who they know, if they are liked, whilst the plebs have to battle it out for their jobs based on actual merit?

Thanks a lot DidoHardingNut.

Just a fact of business life based on personal experience. If I have this experience and you don’t, get over it. More importantly go get the experience yourself. If your experience differs from mine, say so. I can cope with it. All ears.

Recounting personal experience is not pompous. Though I fully accept it invites digs from those without. But hey ho. I can live with it. 😂

Porters always appeared to me like he's a little bit full of himself.
I wonder if he's a wealthy man, if he has financially contributed to the club in order to be a director?

I think Doh's just portraying his natural attributes so that he can soak up the abuse and then return to Mungo's saying how beastly we've been to him.

IMHO.

No. A comment was made, I disagreed and gave reasons why. The issue is too many on this forum prefer to trade insults rather than debate. Sad. But some just don’t have the brains. Or want to engage what brains they have. As soon as that happens I just assume my opinion was correct.

I would hate for people to think insults bother me. They don’t. Not in the least. I have less than zero respect for some on this forum, so why would their opinion matter?
