They already have, to a degree. Labour MP, Shadow Minister, just said on TV that at the last election, people on the doorstep were hostile to Labour. That now is not the case according to her. They are more open to dialogue. That is a major step forward. Labour are no longer the joke, they were. Change of Leader!

What they need to do now is to sell what the party is all about to the general public. Explain what they stand for, their beliefs. It’s a start if people are listening. They just need to talk louder and to the people who matter. That is not Momentum or the union Leaders. Or Corbyn who today is offering advice! Jeez.

The risk is another round of in-fighting. Give Starmer a chance without being hamstrung by people in his own party. The fight is out there, not within. When people grow up to that fact, the Labour Party will genuinely move forward.

You're right that SirKeith got the wallpaper message wrong. Focusing on the cost of it detracted from the real issue which was about honesty and integrity in govt office.

As have said in the other thread, Starmer has made this into a disaster by firing Raynor. The corrective to Labours losing of seats in the north is to start taking more liberal but traditionally Tory seats in the south and major cities. They've begun to make that progress in the east and west of the country with the mayorships there. London, Wales and Manchester all retained easily. Thursdays results aren't nearly as bad as they initially seemed.

The lesson from the west midlands and Tees valley is that having a prominent and popular representative for your party brings a reward in Westminster. Labour need to start rebuilding from the bottom up and have a foothold in some of the
areas they need to win over. But instead it's going to be days of MPs briefing against Starmer. He's manager to take a setback and make into a potentially terminal disaster.

I’m surprised by this election, usually such elections are an opportunity to give the incumbent Government a bit of a kicking. Anybody clutching at straws, suggesting it’s not as bad as it seems are not doing the party any favours. It’s bad.

Wake up, Smell the coffee, get behind Starmer. At least until a better leader emerges. Not too many serious contenders right now.

Labour haven't given the incumbent Govt a kicking at local elections since early Miliband. Last time they gained over 500 seats was 2012.

Corbyn lost seats at 3 out of 4 local elections and was net minus 405 councilors at local elections by the end of his time

Starmer totally over reacted. Losing Hartlepool was almost certain as UKIP didn't figure in this bye election. So he shuffles the shadow cabinet in a mad panic. It seems that he hasn't reflected at all, for example: what were the factors leading to the Labour wins in mayoral races, etc. He comes across now as just devoid of emotional intelligence. His actions today won't earn him a more positive appraisal from the general public.
It is said that he is trying to imitate Blair but Blair was quite clever in managing and charming people.
