Sticking to successful one up front formation
Even in the very last game, we are sticking to this one up front formation that has served us so well this season. Seriously. For the love of God ! No wonder DJ is leaving, without a strike partner all season. I've seen DJ, Wilkinson, Soitrou stuck out on the wing . I've seen Brophy stuck at left back. I've seen Widdowson at centre half. I've seen 2 holding midfielders all season against lower teams . Why have we been scared of the opposition all season ?! And we wonder why we are floundering in mid table.
Quite frankly, i don't care who we bring in as manager as long they put out attack minded teams in this poor league.

Yup it's been a joke, listen back to the Embleton interview about the bizarre flawed logic trying to move Widdowson to CB. It really is Twilight zone stuff. Been no better under McAnuff after his first two games where he did at least change the squad up a bit.
Time to go back to basics, players in their native positions working as a unit.

Agree, but it will never happen whilst Ling is pulling the strings. The man is too set in his ways.gshaw wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 4:27 pm Yup it's been a joke, listen back to the Embleton interview about the bizarre flawed logic trying to move Widdowson to CB. I heard a rumour that M.Ling is not going to have his contract renewed, but TBH, im not confident.the source isnt reliable.

Re: Sticking to successful one up front formation
Great that we have now stuck out Soitriou on the wing with Wilkinson on the other meaning that DJ is now isolated upfront on his own. Great that Brophy has moved to left back . Does this sound familiar at all ? Then again, this is a formation that is tried and tested ....
Re: Sticking to successful one up front formation
Other teams play with wing backs - we play with a Ling back. Listening to Dave Victor today was like a broken record..........Ling back to Vigaroux; Ling back to Happe; Ling back to (perm any one from 8).
And I still haven't forgiven (can't remember which game) where we won a free kick in the opponent's half, Happe & Co trot up to the opposition penalty area and the ball ends up back with Vigaroux.
Until someone gets rid of the negative, pass-it-square/pass-it-back mindset, we will never progress.
The Club absolutely has to get it right with wholesale new player recruitment and a proper manager, not an experiment or job for one of the boys

We’re sh*t with wing backs and we have 1 out and out winger. It’s far too simplistic to say ‘play 442’

Re: Sticking to successful one up front formation
I think Jobi missed an opportunity 4 or 5 games ago to experiment with the team and formation. He would of found out far more about his players and himself. And I believe you could have played with a more attacking formation as some of you wanted to see. He should have certainly played two up front and he could have also played a 442 or 532 formation, regardless of what some have said on here that he couldn’t, ultimately it may of cost him his chance. I think that the American co chairman may be getting a little impatient and wants to see some improvement otherwise he could be off??Four four two wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 3:50 pm Even in the very last game, we are sticking to this one up front formation that has served us so well this season. Re: Sticking to successful one up front formation
Using wing backs was a solution which Justin came up with back in the conference season because we had a load of injuries or something.
It worked nicely back then and helped us get the promotion win over the line.
For some strange reason Embleton then Jobi have tired to persist with this tactic despite it being totally redundant.

Re: Sticking to successful one up front formation
I have a feeling Jobi knew his chances of getting into the play offs were slim with the players he had. He knew their capabilities and some knew they were not getting a new deal weeks ago so from their point of view their mind was in a different place. I think he agreed to the job because their was no alternative for the club at that time. He was in the same position as Ross when Justin passed away. Jobi was on a hiding to nothing.Monkey Boy wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 11:08 pmI think Jobi missed an opportunity 4 or 5 games ago to experiment with the team and formation. We must get rid of the coaching staff as they lack experience. Brill ,Harrold and Lawless should have left the club a year agoJeanluc wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 7:03 pm Other teams play with wing backs - we play with a Ling back. I read a book about Peps time at Bayern and part of it was starting to be slagged off for the tippy tappy style he promoted at Barca and every club since.Jeanluc wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 7:03 pm Other teams play with wing backs - we play with a Ling back. Can’t remember the exact quote but basically the misunderstanding that lots of people have is that is possession for the sake of it, which seems to be where we have fallen. Have the ball, because that’s good, right?
Pep enforces that every single pass had a reason for happening. If there’s a back pass or side pass or even forward pass, it has some intent, rather than for the sake of keeping the ball.
We lack incisiveness and it feels like the players are being trained to just keep the ball, without really knowing why, or how to use it well.
I’m fine with us playing possession football on the ground, but we need to have the players to be able to do it and everyone knowing why they are doing it and how we will use it to create chances.

Re: Sticking to successful one up front formation
If you want to play possession football - which I’m fine with - then you need all 11 players to be comfortable on the ball and you need all outfield players looking for it.
As soon as you have players hiding and not looking for it, the whole thing falls apart. Opponents know they can double up on our left hand side because we don’t go down the right. The left winger knows he can drop back and double up on Wilko because our right back won’t play out.

And the annoying thing is you've been saying this for two seasons now and the stubborn pig headed owners just won't listen to you.Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Sun May 09, 2021 8:11 pm If you want to play possession football - which I’m fine with - then you need all 11 players to be comfortable on the ball and you need all outfield players looking for it.

Personally think the club could do worse things than hire me, max and Ronnie as consultants to avoid some of these obvious catastrophes.

Re: Sticking to successful one up front formation
Looking at his interview after the game he looks genuinely disappointed and let down by his players which he was basically. However he did have an opportunity to make his stamp on things and didn’t take it. It’s as simple as that really. I really hope the new manager goes for a more attacking system/formation and STYLE of football.

Re: Sticking to successful one up front formation
To me it looked like Ross went into the season with the 4-3-3 blue print on the team, with one central striker. We went into the season with central 3 strikers - Johnson, Angol & Sotiriou. The injuries meant we basically had to rely on Johnson for nearly all of the season.
We've missed Angol because it meant we couldn't go direct as often for a plan b, which IMO is partly why we pissed about with it at the back alot of the time - If we kept knocking it long to Johnson who wouldn't have won many aerial duals, people would've complained about that.
Abrahams we got on short notice and for me couldn't play the lone striker.
As others have said - A shame Jobi or Ross didn't try and mix it up a bit with 2 central strikers playing in a game.
