Pissing about with pay rises of a few percent is neither here nor there, we should be aiming for massive regeneration, accepting that town centres and high streets will never be the same again. There's an opportunity to build a better and more sustainable country that benefits everyone if there was the will, instead Boris will most likely spaff it on some bridges.

Re: Disgusting Pay offer to NHS
Confession. I have been a Tory voter all my life but the NHS pay offer has disgusted me. Listening to Boris' eulogy to the NHS on LBC yesterday, praising them as a whole and then specially mentioning those who cared for him when he was so ill almost moved me to tears - or would have done if it wasn't for the utter disdain shown by not throwing out the 1% pay increase recommendation.
And just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, I heard at half-time today on Maajid Nawaz's LBC show that HMRC (those wonderful tax people) have an offer of a three-year deal giving an average pay award of 13% across the term. A 3% increase would be awarded in March 2021 (backdated to June 2020), followed by a 5% increase in June 2021 and a 5% increase in June 2022. He couldn't believe it and asked his researchers to check it out. It's true! Managed to bury that one didn't they.
Unless there's a major u-turn that would put London cabbies to shame, the Conservative party will have irretrievably lost me as a lifelong supporter. Shame on you all

Re: Disgusting Pay offer to NHS
1% being more than inflation BTW and more than most outside the public sector will get this year. The average nurse is already on £40,288 a year including employer pension contributions. It's been a sh*t year for anyone who has worked in intensive care, and there is a very strong case for giving them something to recognise the year that they have had, but there are 299,000 nurses in the NHS, most of whom have not worked on a Covid ward but have had a very quiet year on full pay while normal NHS work has been suspended. IMHO, of course.

Personally I think the police should be looking at circa 10% pay rises.

Re: Disgusting Pay offer to NHS
£37,000,000,000 would pay 300,000 NHS staff a 1% increase (based on a £34K pa average pay) of £340pa for 363 years.
Or a 5% pay increase for 73 years.
However, then we wouldn't have a "World Class" track & trace system would we?

Re: Disgusting Pay offer to NHS
The vast majority of nurses (i.e.85%) are paid at band 5. Even those at the top of Band 5 don't earn 34K so I can't see how that figure can be correct. It may be the average is distorted by some high earners on higher pay scales but I doubt it because there's not that many of them. I seem to remember that teachers got about 3 %. In view of what nurses have been through I think they deserve at least that. The govt have managed to give HMRC staff 13% over 3 years. I don't buy the govt's cant afford it argument bearing in mind the amount of dough they've spunked on track and trace and sh*t PPE.
The whole nurses pay debate shows that we're very divided as a society. I don't know how to describe the divide. Is it left/right or leave /remain ? Maybe it doesn't matter but what I do see is that neither side is happy and the result is that we argue about nurses pay but nobody seems to care that much that Bojo wants a 200k bung to decorate the free gaff he's living in. I hate painting and decorating but even I know that 200k sounds a bit excessive.

Yes, it's supporting those who couldn't work but think about the reasoning behind it.

Re: Disgusting Pay offer to NHS
Also worth remembering that UK average pay is approaching £39K so nursing is a below average paid profession. That makes no sense at all does it?Exiled O wrote: ↑Sun Mar 07, 2021 6:07 amThe vast majority of nurses (i.e.85%) are paid at band 5. Don't forget they all retire at 45 on gold-plated final salary pensions. As an x NHS employee and with the present circumstances 1% is a reasonable raise. Unions are just ramping it up and climb on board !BoniO wrote: ↑Fri Mar 05, 2021 1:27 pm Yes I know this is mentioned on the Tory Watch thread but it's worth highlighting, in my opinion.
The government is offering a 1% pay increase to NHS staff. Nice. It's not as if the NHS staff have done anything recently to warrant some special treatment is it. It's not as if they've risked their lives, or made huge sacrifices for all of us (and continue to do so).
This government continues to lower their moral compass with each passing day. Oh, the cupboards are bare - is the current lament from the government. I guess this all depends on whether or not their chums will be the recipients of their largesse doesn't it.
Not a surprise of course, but that doesn't mean that they don't deserve all the crap they get. The more the merrier - they might even listen to it as being popular seems to be all they crave for.

Re: Disgusting Pay offer to NHS
No they haven't. HMRC used a major restructure of its staff contracts (such as getting rid of overtime for evening/weekend customer service roles) in order to fund the pay rise. No extra government money for the reforms (source).

They're reckoning inflation will be more than 1% aren't they? So it's a real terms pay cut.soloman wrote: ↑Sun Mar 07, 2021 3:08 pmAs an x NHS employee and with the present circumstances 1% is a reasonable raise. They can have my rise oh hang on I'm not getting one and neither is the other half for the second year in a row. As I said earlier in the thread give em a one off payment then it's not attached onto their wages and will benefit those lower down the wage chain better.Mistadobalina wrote: ↑Tue Mar 09, 2021 12:05 pmThey're reckoning inflation will be more than 1% aren't they? Are people arguing that, because they haven't had a pay rise, neither should anyone else? Is it that one again?

Re: Disgusting Pay offer to NHS
So based on the average nurses pay of £34k, the 1% pay rise (which is actually a pay cut in purchasing power due to that darn inflation thingy) would be the equivalent of about a portion of fish & chips every week. Keep clear of exotics like plaice or skate or you've blown it big time.
Not much of a thank you is it?
