I may be wrong, but I gather he missed out on the initial roll-out as they were on holiday in Barbados (which was allowed at that time). And then, after coming back, he became unwell and developed pneumonia (possibly because of Covid), which prevented him from receiving the vaccine.

Hmmm, try this. Imagine that the reasons he was sent to Burma are irrelevant, completely irrelevant. Just focus on the fact that all the soldiers who were sent to Burma had no choice in the matter, they were in the Army during wartime and they had to do as they were told.

He wasn't there "getting a suntan", he was there under orders, and Burma saw plenty of action against the Japanese. It was not a nice place to be (putting it mildly).

He was an elderly man doing who achieved a great deal in his life and the fundraising fete was a massive amount of icing on the cake of his life.

Having said this, I feel there is an over-exuberant ‘Lady Diana’ outpouring of vented up grief here. Knighthoods, statues, military promotions, band-wagon jumping eagerness to err from perspective. Newspapers and rubbish day time shows using his story as ‘stocking fillers’ is crass.

He was an example to all, the ere are many unsung heroes out there who quietly do good in life. Let’s just respect Sir Tom for his life and what he has done and remember him as a good man.

I was reluctant to post on this topic, as apparently the ole boy was a well loved geezer. But my take on this has many points which I think are worth bearing in mind. 1 He came from a well-off family, that tends to ameliorate your way through life, hence he obtained his century. 2 Most UK geezers if they had reached 100 years today, could look back on some War time achievement, sadly most passed away quite a long time ago. 3 His family did a absolutely fabulous job of promoting his garden walk and getting other people to cough up their money, for the NHS ( I am pretty sure their business acumen helped them gain all their publicity ). 4 From a distance his efforts looked pretty good as he dragged himself around the garden with gritted teeth- but I know plenty of people who have to do the same, just to get on with their life and their families don't go searching for publicity.
My take is, I would advocate quietly that everyone pay a little more income tax or similar to fund the NHS. That way the true heroes could be paid a decent wage. But the truth is people would be howling with rage at having to fork out some of their hard earned money- be that it, may only be a comparatively piddling amount.
I seem to remember some time ago Bojo caused some outrage by saying that people had got too sentimental and all this public outpouring of grief was a load of baloney. He was fiercely criticised. Therefore stand-by for Bojo to announce the ole boy is gonna get a full State Funeral. Just think of all the extra votes that would get him!

People found a positive rallying point at a very dark time and he's one of a shrinking pool of ww2 vets. I get that there's an overreaction but seems odd to be contrary about him.
