Very sad that a good man has died.

May the earth lie light upon him.

I assume everyone who's been down talking covid, lock down, etc, will see this as just another number.

Unbelievably crass.
He was an embarrassment to the ‘government’!
You obviously don’t agree! how sad are you?
Was he? I bet the NHS has had a lot more than £30m during this pandemic.

Has Boris taken advantage of this opportunity yet?
I can't see anybody sinking low enough to try and use the death of this lovely old man for cheap political point scoring, can you?

Maybe not. But it is heroic to fight for your country in a world war. Without people like him, you wouldn't be here to make crass comments like that.

I for one will morn him as a hero.

Who cares. He was over there defending a place we colonised and getting a nice tan in the process. You think he was over there defensing the great Burmese people? Or the interests of the Empire.

Quite amazing how you’re so happy to demonstrate your abject stupidity and ignorance. He went to Burma because he was sent there, he didn’t have a choice in the matter, like any other soldier who was posted.

I'm pretty sure he didn't have much choice. There was a war on you know.

The interesting point about the existence of an Empire back then is that without it Britain may not have been able to stand against the fascists after the collapse of France.

Sent there to defend a country we colonised. How heroic

80 years later, he has a walk around his garden and gets knighted. Do me a f*cking favour.

That’s fine but the conflict in Burma had nothing to do with the quality of life I have today

Take over 3/4 of the world so we can use them as cannon fodder when it suits. Then have silly racists telling them to go back home when they want to start a new life here.

The old boy doing a hundred laps of his garden was the type of feel good story we needed during the first lockdown, and he seemed a decent old duffer to boot.

The spectacle of the media and politicians lapping it up and the subsequent gong and flag waving all got a bit Princess Di - Queen of Hearts treacly, though. But he was Officer Class War Veteran material from the Shires, so not surprising his (initial) little charity stunt got the boost.

It's sad for his family, and he did well for his age. But the news coverage is way over the top. I guess it provides a different focal point for a bit.

You can say that again.

You would have thought that given his age and his profile, he would have been one of the first in line for the vaccine back in December.

Apparently he couldn’t due to pneumonia medication he was taking

I may be wrong, but I gather he missed out on the initial roll-out as they were on holiday in Barbados (which was allowed at that time). And then, after coming back, he became unwell and developed pneumonia (possibly because of Covid), which prevented him from receiving the vaccine.

So your basically saying he had to die of something. Thanks for that.

Just seen this, his family took him on a freebie all expenses paid month long first class holiday to Barbados courtesy of British Airways, rather than getting him vaccinated.

I'm sure it was an amazing holiday but not sure that's the choice I'd have made.
