Sorry, that may be your belief, but it isn’t what studies into exactly this have concluded.
Sorry you are wrong.
My own brother is a Bus driver (Which you might say low skilled, could you drive one in London)?they have had on their benefits stripped away since 2010 where overtime is paid at single rate, no enhancement for unsociable hours etc etc.
They say if you don’t want to do it then there are 20 Eastern European’s who will.
What do you expect them to do? Learn a trade at the age of 50.?
You are as out of touch as the Labour Party.
This has happened all over the country in different industries.
One of my neighbours works in a River Island warehouse, another who you would call low skill.
They have increased their hours and stopped overtime payments, the Union tried to fight this but were in a weak position because all the desparate foreign workers would do it.
I will turn the argument on its head, we don’t need “low skilled” foreign workers we have enough of our own to cover this the only the British worker insists on is being treated fairly and rewarded fairly.
We now also have night work paid at just above the minimum wage.
I knew a fella that used to work at our local Tesco warehouse 20 years ago,he was on time and a half for night work plus paid breaks etc. The reason they gave all these extra benefits is because no one would work these hours otherwise. This has now changed with Blair’s idiotic decision to open the floodgates without putting laws in place to ensure companies would not exploit this.
The grinning idiot thought there would only be a few thousand come over obviously forgetting the English language is spoke all over the world.
I'm not saying that you haven't experienced this (or that I could drive a bus - I couldn't) but those few experiences does not make your assertion universally true. All I am saying is, since this is a common argument, that it has been well studied and the conclusion of these studies is that migration has little impact on employment and t&c's but where it does, it is primarily on the lower to unskilled sector.
Please understand, I'm not being personal, and this is no comfort to those experiencing this first hand, but the solution isn't to slam the door closed, it's to retrain or make sure you learn some skills in the first place. It is possible to learn new things in your fifties. Many of the jobs you think you might be securing are extremely vulnerable to automation anyway. Politics aside, that's the reality.
You are so out of touch it is unreal.
I accept that certain jobs are open to automation.
I have experienced this myself in the print trade.
The presses are now fully automated and have been de-skilled.
This has resulted in lower wages and less staff.
I have been out of work for a year, and in that time I have turned down 4 jobs because I will not devalue myself and work for terms and conditions my father fought against in the 1930s
Fortunately,I am not as thick as two short planks like you think.
I paid my mortgage off in 2010 and because I have more than 16 k I can’t claim a penny off the state.
The minimum wage is not first for purpose.
This needs to be addressed.
How the hell companies can legally pay people under 25 less for doing the same job as someone who is older?
You are a adult at 18. This is blatant age discrimination.
My brother left school at 16 in 1972.
He got a “unskilled job” job at Britain’s toy factory.
He got a “woman’s wage”
for 6 months, then he was put on a full mans wage after that.
By the time he was 18 he had moved out and bought his own car for £500.
No one there was exploited and yes, my Dad called it a dead end job but you could certainly support yourself.
Again, we don’t need an influx of lower skilled workers driving conditions down.
We have a good and ready British workforce who will do the job for decent terms and conditions.
And no, the government should NOT be topping up wages to help out their mates who can’t or won’t pay a fair wage.
