I'll do the deaths count first today to avoid offending Ronnie : another 1,290 sadly, though much down on yesterday's. In reality, the figures reported yesterday were probably too high and today too low because of the usual reporting quirks. Will be good if anyone can post up the actuals (and link to where those come from)

Patients admitted to hospital trend is now turning (down 1.1%) and new infections are down by 25% in the last seven days too. 300k+ vaccines reported to have been administered in the past day too So good news on these counts.

Wont see that deaths figure drop for another few days yet unfortunately - same with the numbers on ventilatators, But admissions coming down is a good sign and hopefully we will see a steady if unspectacular drop daily from here on in. Infection rates for the last six days as a percentage of tests carried out have been 9.34%, 8.42%, 9.25%, 6.74%, 5.76%, 6.07% at it's peak two or three weeks ago we were lookin at figures of 12.13 or even 14%.

Another 67 sites came on line for vaccinations today, as long as the supply of Vaccine holds up the mid February deadline for the target groups is well acheivable.

Patients admitted to hospital is flat now (up 0.5% in latest seven day period). Coupled with tumbling infection percentage things should hopefully be improving as far as hospitals go in the next few weeks. Another 340k first vaccines administered too.

New high for deaths though - 1,820.

Yeah, it's the headline and a really grim fact but we sadly knew that deaths would be this high around now and things get worse. We've acknowledged that many times in this thread already. But fixating on deaths only when there is the bigger picture to consider would be wrong because this thread isn't just about the headlines. Just hope that the daily updates can get a little better each time so the compound effect kicks in over time.

I just dont watch BBC news anymore.

I think by now we all know the terrible death toll involved with this pandemic. But there is so much more now to be optimistic about not that you would ever think so watching BBC News. ITV and others have a better balanced approach IMHO, while they report the figures as they must they dont feel they have to have a five minute segment every day with an "expert" telling us deaths at an all time high but not explaining the that the shambolic reporting system is mainly the reason for some alarming jumps in figures.

What’s the definition of underlying health condition?

My understanding is that it's any health condition (mental or physical) that is chronic or long-term. So for example, I take tablets for high blood pressure, so even though the medication keeps my blood pressure at normal (and I'm otherwise healthy, touch wood), if I die of Covid-19 in hospital I'd be recorded as 'underlying health condition'.
