Womens World Cup
Starts Friday. Many games on BBC1.
Stand by for jokes about dodgy keepers. England have a tough group, including Scotland, Argentina & Japan - but will be disappointed if they don’t reach the latter stages of the competition.

Re: Womens World Cup
Club level is not that good, but international level is much better IMO. I look forward to it.
Norway have one of the best player in world, Ada Hegeberg (BBC Women's Footballer of the Year in 2018), but she doesn`t want to play for our national team.

Keepers are generally poor though, most seem reluctant to dive and if they do its after the ball has sailed by.
Must be a reason why goalkeeping is such a poor aspect of the women's game.

Re: Womens World Cup
What good is making the goals smaller if the pitch is the same size?
I remember when I used to play under 11 football over the marshes on full size pitches with full size goals and the ridiculous scores like 30-0 because teams with 12 and 13 year old ringers would just chip the goalkeeper on the line. And the keeper could barely kick the ball out of the area.
In many countries (and also in lots of soccer schools) they play on smaller pitches with smaller balls and smaller goals so the game is at the same scale.
In golf, women's tees are in front of men's tees. I think it would be better if goals, pitches and balls were set appropriately.

Re: Womens World Cup
Over the marshes, 18 yard boxes were still the same size, even if pitches were narrower and shorter, And goals were same size.

Re: Womens World Cup
It is odd. The passing, movement and technical ability of outfield players has always been good and standard has improved as new crops of players come through yet the keepers don't seem to have moved on that much in comparison.one o in huntingdon wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2019 5:01 pmslacker wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2019 4:41 pm Starts Friday. Is it poor coaching or something else? I don't buy the smaller goals arguments as the clangers that people notice aren't top corner shots or being beaten when at full stretch but far more basic errors.

Re: Womens World Cup
I like women’s rugby. The slower pace seems to suit the game. Women’s football is terrible. Football played badly is not a good watch unless really badly like a terrible Sunday league side which is hilarious.

Phsicality. Theres little physical contact, and the tempo is much slower. I find womens football terrible to watch because of thatone o in huntingdon wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2019 8:15 pmMe neither, not sure why exactly, just seems to be lacking something

Re: Womens World Cup
It was comments made by the manager of the Chelsea women's team pointing out the differences in stature between men and women. It was along the lines of they're generally shorter than men so the goals should be adjusted to compensate.

Re: Womens World Cup
Slight tangent. Women's teams participating at the WC are being given £24mil. Men's teams were given £315mil in 2018:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48535933. Complaints about "male chauvinism".
I would 100% advocate equal pay when the broadcasting rights, general level of interest and attendances are in line with the men's game.
Until they are - the women's game will earn less money. The gap is closing, which I believe is a good thing as the women's game grows.
But I don't understand the whining when economics dictates how money is allocated.

You can't really expect wages to be high if there are less than 2000 watching your matches, or prizemoney be high if the income from ticket sales, TV rights and merchandise aren't huge.eppinggas wrote: ↑Thu Jun 06, 2019 9:26 am Slight tangent. However, if you are representing your country at the highest level, your expenses and remuneration should be the same whether male or female

Re: Womens World Cup
But that money I was referring to comes from FIFA... I''m not against the men's game subsidising the women's game to a degree. But to demand anything approaching equal pay is IMHO just ridiculous.Real Al wrote: ↑Thu Jun 06, 2019 8:12 pmYou can't really expect wages to be high if there are less than 2000 watching your matches, or prizemoney be high if the income from ticket sales, TV rights and merchandise aren't huge.eppinggas wrote: ↑Thu Jun 06, 2019 9:26 am Slight tangent.
