Multiple videos posted online claim to show empty hospitals in the UK as evidence that the coronavirus pandemic has been exaggerated.
It has provoked a strong reaction from healthcare officials, who have encouraged the public to heed government advice as coronavirus infections surge - putting pressure on the NHS.
Responding to a question about hospital beds being empty, NHS England chief executive Sir Simon Stevens said: "When people say that, that is a lie."
What do the videos show?
They're mostly filmed by individuals walking through quiet hospital corridors and are being posted in Facebook groups and on the Twitter feeds of coronavirus sceptics and anti-lockdown activists.
There have been videos taken of dozens of locations and some have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.
The number of Covid patients has increased significantly in recent weeks and there are serious concerns about the NHS's ability to cope with the surge.
However, because of the way healthcare trusts have reorganised hospitals, often separating Covid patients from others, and cancelling non-urgent care to free up capacity, some parts of hospital buildings will currently look empty. That doesn't mean hospitals aren't busy.

I wonder what the motivation of people who post this stuff is.

Do they really believe that the whole thing is a hoax that only they are capable of revealing, or is it just the need to be a name on the internet. As someone who doesn't really 'do' social media, I'm guessing it's the second - which is a bit sad really, if that's what you've decided your prime objective is. I genuinely think some people have completely lost track of what is important, and what isn't.

Sometimes these pieces of news are SO stupid.....yet many people believe them as TRUE !

That's different from skulking around the empty parts of a hospital at night during a pandemic and therefore declaring there isn't a massive issue.

Really.

Example 1. I needed a blood test. Booked by phone, given a date and time. Arrived, went in, got tested and left. The place was nearly empty because slots are being managed that way.
Example 2. My sister has heart issues. Got her appointment, given date and time. Went in one entrance, got sorted, left by another entrance. Place was largely empty. Appointment management avoiding people mixing.
Example 3. My granddaughter needed a blood test, refer to example 1
Example 4. Mrs dOh mammogram. Got date and time. Waited in the car, got a call from the nurse, went in one door, out another. Only one person in the area. Because they are looking after people.

Now if any of us wanted to paint a picture of empty hospitals then a quick photo for Facebook would have done the trick. When will people realise there is a massive programme in place to care for the public by managing appointments and entrance and exits. If places look empty that because hospitals are doing their best to look after people. Not complex.

The conclusion is you only see what you see. Having not gone near any of the normal wards I did not see how busy the hospital is with COVID. Anyone walking around where I did would have seen a near empty hospital. Doesn’t mean it isn’t busy.

Err - so why did you make your comment about Oncology being quiet in the first place? You wrote that as a counterpoint to reports that the Hospital was struggling with Covid numbers. You're making even less sense than normal. That's quite an achievement.

When they say hospitals are being overrun, it is purely the volume of covud patients that they can deal with.

They are talking about 28,000 beds being used out of over 150,000 in hospitals. You need medical staff that can deal with this situation. We are lacking due to only 75-80% of medical staff being available.

But this is the worst week of the for death by respiratory illnesses (flu etc), normally staffing levels would be higher.

Several hospitals are struggling and some very dedicated staff are working up to 80 hours a week and badly need help. Unfortunately, nearly 25% of staff are seen as vulnerable and have not worked since last March.

We will only know the true extent when excess deaths are worked out.

IF the main issues are lack of staff (any proof of that?) has the government brought back all the ex-NHS retirees who volunteered to go back to work during the crisis? I've seen reports that this vast resource hasn't been tapped. Anyone have an insight here?

A point people miss with this and these videos support what I’m going to say. We are dealing with a very highly infectious virus, a lot of people actually catch covid in hospital who were well when they went in for example. Hospitals have been isolating covid to a certain section of the hospital and trying to keep those patients as far away from the rest of the hospital and other patients as much as possible so that they may give themselves the best chance of keeping the spread as low as they can possibly keep it within their confines.

People then film the hospital being empty and wards have been closed for general admissions as front line staff like I’ve told you all before are being redeployed to help out and beat covid for those patients infected. Hence why you see sections of hospitals empty, wards in darkness and doors locked. If they went to the part where covid patients are you would see ward(s) full, lots of doctors and nurses working hard to combat the virus.
