Is that a new PB for deaths?

Think so in terms of the reported figures. Very sad and likely to continue at this level for a while as the Xmas/New Year impact continues to take hold.

Perhaps, but unlikely. Need to give it at least a few more days for any sort of trend.

You would hope so - been a week since all the New Years gatherings, 2 weeks since the Xmas get together and we’re now several days into the lockdown.

Still another 10 days to 2 weeks until deaths peak, though.

Looking at the figures for Europe for deaths per 1M population there are now 15 countries with over 1k deaths per million population according to Worldometer, and Germany are experiencing some daily death rates of over 1k.

It's a bad situation almost everywhere in Europe.

My wife is getting her first vaccine shot on Sunday. She’s NHS and is at risk due to immunodeficiency issues. I’m not sure how she’ll take to being stored at -73°c for four weeks til the second jab, but beggars can’t be choosers.

So we’ve now overtaken Italy with most deaths, despite having 2 months notice of what was coming after seeing it ravage their country first. 👍

Higher deaths in several countries.

Belgian, Italy, Bosnia, North Macedonia, lichtenstein, San Marino and Peru for starters.

Around our level Spain, France, USA and many others.

The issue you have is how these are recorded. For example in Germany you now have to die from Covid, this is not the case in the UK, where you have only to be tested positive for covid in the previous 28 days. If you are killed in an accident and have had covid in the previous 28 days, you are a covid death.

For completeness from the ONS site only 1979 people had died of covid without having underlying conditions of which 377 were under 60 as at mid December.

So is your conclusion that we're doing OK then? We have nothing to complain about? The government is doing a good job?

Thanks. So, in terms of deaths per million to date, we are 7th in the league with the following worse than us:
Belgium
Slovenia
Italy
Bosnia
North Macedonia
Czech Rep

In terms of absolute deaths, we are 5th in the league with the following worse than us:

USA
Brazil
India
Mexico

You can't compare all those piddly little countries. We dwarf them in absolute number of deaths.

The only one of a similar size is Italy. And we had 2 months warning of what was happening there and have now gone past them and continue to surge away.

You can't compare to them, they've got way more inhabitants than we have so of course they will have more absolute deaths. We have a lot more deaths per population than all of them.

It wasn't my intention to compare us to them, but to illustrate how poorly we're performing based on those two specific metrics.

How many people do you think have had a positive covid test, spend a week or two feeling unwell, then die in a freak bungee jumping accident in the 2 weeks after that?

The whole "tested positive for Covid in the previous 28 days" argument is bizarre. Sure, there may well be some people who are falsely recorded as a Covid statistic. But in real terms this will never be a material proportion of recorded deaths. if anything, I reckon the way the UK government is reporting on Covid deaths is pretty robust. This is an absolute sh*t show.

If you have a positive covid test, hang on in there for more than 28 days before your lungs finally pack up, are you excluded from the death toll?
