One of my favourite authors. Beautiful style to his writing. RIP.
Agree. This was a man who knew his subject matter deeply given his background in post-war politics and counter-intelligence.

He was a wonderful raconteur too.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - the Alec Guinness BBC seven part adaptation - is one of the best things I've seen on TV and watch it periodically.

John Le Carré - RIP.

Le Carre was one of only 2 writers where I blitzed their published novels after discovering them (the other was Chandler). Gets extra marks for being a decent guy who didn’t become a festering Old Gammon, and turning down stupid “honours”. RIP.

Lilo Lil (Actress Eileen Pollock) of "Bread" fame. One of the best ever comedies on the Beeb and Lil was one of the best Irish tarts to appear on TV. RIP, Eileen. Only 73.

Sad to read, R.I.P., remember him well.

Local connection in Norfolk, for when I first moved up here I lived in the village of Lingwood, which is where John's equally famous cousin Bill Edrich was born, John was from neighbouring Blofield, there were other family cricketers too. Always felt there should have been some commemoration locally to them but there isn't to my knowledge, I've since moved away from that area.

John Edrich was a very good opening batsman whose ability was surpassed only by his courage. The first opening partnership that I recall was Edrich and Boycott and while Boycott usually grabbed the headlines Edrich continued to perform solidly never letting England down. I recall him standing firm in the face of some really hostile Australian and West Indian fast bowling and one picture of him taken in the dressing room after play where he was covered in bruises after being peppered by the West Indians, he was also a very decent gully fieldsman. RIP JE

Watched the Morcambe and Wise Christmas special from 1975 tonight. Eric mentions England cricketer John Edrich in a sketch.
Just found out today that John Edrich had died!
Spooky coincidence!

Just noticed this. The number of times I watched him open in tests on TV in the 60's and 70's. Great opener.

and another Surrey man gone to the great wicket in the sky - Robin Jackman. I remember seeing him at Lords in the first over of the day of a test match (can't remember against who, but I think it might have been the Aussies) running out the backing up batsman by just getting fingers to the ball the receiving batsman had hit back up the wicket and deflecting the ball onto the stumps. Dickie Bird was the umpire. Fantastic cricket.

Anyone’s death is bad news but you describe him well. Cue , lefties rapidly contributing, keyboard smoke billowing, gnashing their teeth in tears as they type words in his defence.

Giving an abbreviated reply. No layman is privileged to the facts here. Papers will be released several years hence. Only information is available from sources already released, numerous books written on the subject of Blake and his. associates . You cannot readily believe anything released by the Russians spies supposedly executed.
