Lib Dems Watch

Post by Disoriented »

According to the latest YouGov poll, they would attract a higher percentage of the vote than both the Tories and Labour.

Seems there are more Remainers than some people think.

The poll in question asked c.1750 people. Hardly representative.

In the YouGov poll the Brexit Party was buried in the " others", so the result was skewered . I've seen other polls that has the Brexit Party in front so it all depends on what polls you're looking at .

Polls are often skewed by how you ask the question.

With Jo Swinson likely to take the reins, they could be dark horses come the next GE.

Ah, she's the one that knows exactly how much we will be affected by going onto wto rules. No references or past history given, just plucked from the ether. Project fear rises again.

I hope she gets elected as she's a right oddball and once the public see more of her they won't vote for her party of oddballs.

It is going to be interesting to see exactly where the Brexit party are going to stand in a general election. In a Tory seat with, say avaerage 52% of leavers they would take away at least a half of the tory vote thus the leavers would have at best 25% of the poll. On the other hand many of the 48% of remainers voting are going to go for the Lib Dems as their best chance of staying in europe and should easily get past the 25% in the poll.

In a Labour seat it is different as the inability of the Labour leadership to come up with any kind of policy that the average voter can understand could leave their vote splintering in several directions, expect the next manifesto to be called 'Red Fence' by the way. If they try and placate the leavers the remainers go to the Lib Dems. Conversely Brexit will gain if they try and hang on to the remainers. Difficult to see what will happen.

Any kind of electorial pact with the Tories, over who fights what, will force Labour to try and do the same with the Lib Dems or be wiped out, the price for that almost certainly would be Corbyns head.

GE's are about more than single issues which is what the Brexit Party Ltd is. Therefore, they will win very little as the Tory and Labour supporters go back to their natural homes.

The Yella Tories will poll well but the Electoral system will thankfully deliver them next to nothing.

And I simply don't understand your final para. Labour and electoral pacts with the Yellow Tories? Really!

The Tories will be soon be the nasty party of bitter English nationalism making the Brexit Party Ltd redundant.

If there was the prospect of a Tory/Brexit party government from an election agreement they would have to do something or be in purpetual opposition, probably as the third party behind the Lib Dems, the centre ground will start to swell as tory remainers have their seats given to the Brexit party and more Labour defectors get fed up with the leadership, Change is going nowhere on its own and will dissolve into the Lib Dems. Remember there will be a new PM from the right of the party.

I take your point about the system Max and that would be the same for Brexit if they cant do a pact with the Tories, but, leave or remain, a lot voters are going to want to punish the Tories for the mess they have made of leaving Europe and Labour for the way they assisted. So who do they vote for?

Its possible we will have left the EU by the time the next GE comes around, and the Brexit Party will have sunk into oblivion.
If Labour back remain now, they will lose a lot of northern seats, where 70% of the idiots.........errr sorry voters, voted leave. The Lib-Dems will definitely do well, in the south, until Brexit is sorted one way or the other

What Max said.

I saw that in a poll Brexit party would win a general election, but to do that they need policies and right now I could not name one policy. However, the people backing them maybe power hungry now and might try to push through with populist policies which appeal to the centre ground voters who are out there in abundance.

I don't think they are.

They're content with the tory party in every regard, other than this one issue.

I think yougov should do an alternative poll. This is usually a telephone poll.

Greens
SNP
Brexit
Plaid C
UKip
Others (con, lab, ld)

See what the result is and then compare and contrast.

Surprised nobody’s mentioned the “other” leadership contest. Probably because the Libs are crushingly dull. But they’re got a spike in support from the chattering classes over their Bollox To Brexit stance, and if there is a snap GE they could well hold the balance of power again. Wonder if they have learnt the lessons of Cleggmania and getting nowt out of being the junior partner in a coalition?

Anyways, Jo Swinson got the nod over Dreary Davey. At least she’s not an Orange Book frother, and despite seeming a real centrist bore, I imagine the tabloids will be happy to feature sneaky pics of her ample up-front assets when there’s nothing else to chat about.

Couldn’t find this thread, hence the duplication.
