Re: Highlights beating league leaders
I don't wish to be a Ling hater but I draw your attention to the build up of Newport's goal. As the ball is played up their left wing everybody is
sprinting back, either to carry the attack on or defend it, take a look at Ling, he is just ambling along like he's on a Sunday morning jog.
First priority signing must be a decent right back who can defend, run a bit faster and has more interest in the game.

That part of Lings game has been obvious for all to see for quite a while now. When Judd was in the side, far more energy in his game and Myles would sprint back to cover after being caught up-field. I doubt that Sam Ling would get a place as right back in many other division 2 sides other than Leyton Orient, but it is what it is.
Yes ''Tunji Akinola looked decent enough.'' but seems like he is down the pecking order now as is Thomas who must be considering as to if he should go back to Norwich City and then get a chance of being loaned out to another team.
On the plus side, we have Jobi at 39 years old taking on fullbacks and sprinting past them, what a player and what a comeback he has made this season !

Re: Highlights beating league leaders
This is true but I dont think it’s down to the reasons people are making out. His whole game is based on not making a mistake. Now that might sound like a decent philosophy but it’s not. It’s most noticeable when we have the ball, trying to play it out from the back, he hides behind the winger marking him. We never break out down the right hand side, it’s always through Widdowson. And when he does get the ball, he will always play the easy ball inside to Coulson or Cisse/Hector or Vigaro, rather than taking responsibility and looking for Wilko or DJ or Jobi etc further ahead. It’s true that he rarely gives the ball away, his stats probably look great, he just passes the buck for someone else to go long.Chicken Dhansak wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 1:53 pm I don't wish to be a Ling hater but I draw your attention to the build up of Newport's goal. In the build up to the goal yesterday, the ball goes into his channel. But as his man is upfield with him, he’s content with that. He’s doing his job of marking the left winger so in his mind hasn’t made an error. It’s not that he strolls back lazily, or has been caught upfield attacking (obviously not), it’s simply that he’s making sure his job is done of staying with his man.
Whereas a natural defender or team player without that mindset is busting a gut to get back in, then worry about who to pick up.

And THAT is why he should move on. It's 100% the wrong environment for him and he can't and won't escape the connection with his Dad. He isn't my type of player at all, but he was far better at Dagenham and actually offered something fairly dangerous there. Plus he could play when playing CM in our YT. That player, with that sort of confidence and not constantly looking to just do enough would have been fine (but not my first choice). It's just a bad environment for him to be in.

I’ve no idea what he was like in his 25 career games or whatever it was at Dagenham, I never saw him so can’t comment.

It does just feel like a personal obsession with you. He did about 40 games with them but you even say a lower amount to make the decision sound worse. It's odd.
We basically agree he should go but still you have a pop at Justin. I can't wait for him to go just so this place has something else to talk about.

Re: Highlights beating league leaders Newport
I think Ling has improved massively in his last two games. His effort is noticeably better as his taking responsibility. Widdowson despite all his critics has never been a shirker. Ling was. But that has changed recently, don’t know why, don’t care why. Just happy it has.
I noticed his absence for their goal. The extended highlights does show him lacking effort to get back. But on this occasion I’m happy to give him the doubt, following team orders, rather than being lazy. Solely based on his general effort in the game.
If he continues then I’m all for giving preference to contracted players over loan players. But it needs to continue, the Ling of old was a liability. Ling of late is adding to the team. Something has put a rocket up his arse. Hope it lasts.

Re: Highlights beating league leaders Newport
The 'THAT' we were both referring to were the comments in my initial post. That his performances in an Orient shirt these past 2 years do not justify his signing.
I just want the team to do well and think he's the one stand out weak link in an otherwise pretty strong line up.
Oh come on, that's pathetic. I've just checked Soccerbase and turns out he started 35 games for Dagenham, not 25, so I apologise for getting the estimated figure so far out. The point being made is that, despite his age - what was he, 22 when we signed him? - he was untried and untested and all those saying he was a star of the non-league and being chased by teams from divisions above are being honest.
Where have I had a pop at Justin? That's nonsense.
I agree with your final sentence, tho.

Re: Highlights beating league leaders Newport
I watched the FA cup replay in 17th October 2017 when Leyton Orient playing at home beat Dagenham 1-0, Bonne scored the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute of the game. Ling played at right back for the daggers, he had an ok game, nothing spectacular, but IMO, the young Judd playing in the unaccustomed role of left wingback, outshone Ling and despite at times showing some lack of technical ability, he more than compensated for that by his driving energy and enthusiasm. Judd did well that night despite being played out of position.Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 5:19 pmNo,THAT is why he should never have been signed.PoliticOs wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 3:10 pm And THAT is why he should move on. What was Newports goal disallowed for? I heard their manager having a rant about the officials, but can't tell why in either of the vids.
Some criminal defending for our goals, Newports defence must have had a proper off day as they can't be top if they do that regularly.

Ok all, aside from the obvious WUM, many on this forum are better at analysis than I but:
> Were Ling’s performances generally better under JE?
> Should he play further forward with a solid, nut-crunching FB brought in?
> If he lacks motivation, why? Because he’s out of position? Is he fed up with this forum? Is he complacent about his place in the team because of his family connections?
(I’m not deliver trying to lengthen this thread but something is clearly wrong with his game and if LOFC can’t /won’t see it then ‘they’ll carry on asking the same ol questions and carry on getting the same ol answers’ ... ie an inadequate performance. )
