Where's the comparison to "average deaths"? Isn't that average line just the 7 day average of the covid deaths?

I thought we were way over "average deaths" over the last several months.

Blimey - you're having a mare on this one, aren't you? You've misinterpreted the graph on this page, so that " we're only slightly above average deaths", on page 192 you missed the fact that the daily death numbers you were quoting didn't include those outside hospital, which meant you were insisting that actual deaths were somewhere about half of the reality.

I'm sure you're not deliberately trying to downplay or understate the problem, but your data interpretation isn't that great and both errors ended up giving your readers the mistaken impression that things weren't as bad as they actually are. Bad science !

In my defence, the word 'average' isn't particularly descriptive, and the excess deaths are nowhere near first wave levels.

I'll have a proper look tomorrow - I think it's just breaking out the white bars on the Excess Deaths (the "non-covid" excess deaths) into their underlying causes. Not 100% certain that's the case, but when I get some time tomorrow I'll try and vouch back the numbers on both charts - they're from the same source so they should marry up.

A caller with an interest in hospitality on Five live this morning made a good point regarding pub/restaurant openings.
His view was that rather than 30 people mixing indoors at Xmas , surely it would be better to allow them into Covid safe pubs and restaurants where their behaviour can be better monitored and controlled.
That does sound a more sensible option. Keep hospitality going and protect people from the fall out that will now surely follow In January.

How would it be monitored and controlled? Landlords desperately need the trade, they aint kicking people out and you also have mixed households and bubbles mixing under one roof.

Presumably, however, the people who want a free for all won't go to the pub in that case, precisely because they've got Covid protocols in place.

(or they'll go to the pub first and then all head round someone's house for the after party, inviting along any strangers they meet in the pub)

But he wouldn't, would he? He's obsessed with being popular and being "the man who saved Christmas" - so he's not going to say "no household mixing" (regardless of how impossible that would be to police).

Publicans arguing that pubs are the best place to be open is not surprising - I've spend my career in the hospitality industry, and I have a huge amount of sympathy with them. I well remember making the argument that we should be allowed to open in the afternoon (yes, I AM that old) because "supervised drinking in a licensed establishment was safer that people doing it at home". That's what we said - what we meant was, we want the sales.

I am all for hospitality making money and staying afloat. I have no issue with that.
But most scientists I have read since the announcement agree that cases will increase again as a result of the relaxation at Xmas. In America they believe Thanksgiving will result in thousands more deaths.
It’s just my opinion , but I think it makes plenty of sense to encourage people to pubs and restaurants rather than mixing at home.
I suppose we will find out in January
