O's players you thought were rubbish but other people rated

Post by Exiled O »

I'm only going to give my top three some may find this controversial:

1) Gary Bellamy: Thought he was absolute cack to be honest. Couldn't understand why we signed him in the first place and my view never really changed.

2) Scott Barrett: Became a hero for his heroics in the play-off semi penalty shoot out. I just never thought he was a very good goalkeeper.

3) Gary Alexander: Yeah I know he was in the promotion side but I just didn't get it. Thought he was over rated. Sorry.

Scott was a solid L2 keeper.

Alexander was way too good for L2.

Colin West. One of the worst football players I've ever seen. Yet some people seemed to think he could play.

For point no. 3, you should be sorry. He wasn't called SGA for nothing.

Considering some of the trash we've had over the years your three picks are suggesting to me that your knowledge of football is a bit lacking. Gary Alexander, particularly, was a fine player for the O's

I was hoping others might give their top three. Of course we've had lots of players worse than Alexander, the list is almost endless. We all have players that other people think are great but personally we just don't rate. It's not always rational. I would included (as EH16 suggested) Colin West but I'd forgotten that there were people that rated him.

Got to agree about Colin West. Thought he was absolute poop. The dinked penalty miss against Swansea (i think) comes flooding back.
Never got the love-in for Wim Walschaerts but maybe he was just better than the rest of the sh*t we had at the time.

In Sitton's book he makes it clear that-in his view- West was physically shot. However, if memory serves me correctly it didn't stop him picking him every week. West was a very lucky to play for theO's as long as did. I have to agree in that I thought he was embarrasingly bad.

Totally agree, Mr back off, sideways or back for most of the games he played in . So negative, frustrating and boring to watch.

It’s funny cos I know this is a widely held view, but when I first went when I was 6 or 7, I thought the sun shone out of his arse cos no one else in that team scored a f*cking goal (or so it seemed to me)

Sean Thornton. Always wondered what people saw in him, tbh. Pisshead who just seemed to waste his considerable talent.

I may be wrong but think some people rated Adam Boyd.
For me he was a lazy luxury player whose goals to games ratio made him look better than he was due to penalty taking.

I will probably get mullered for this, but I'm going to throw Jabo Ibhere into the mix. He was not the brilliant player a lot of people think
he was, he played as a striker, but I ask you, as a frontline striker, how many goals did he score when he got the chance of a one on one
with the opposition goalkeeper?

DaveH had a mancrush on him and "classy" Steve Watts (another who should have made this list). Anyone know if Dave is still around?

Agree, he was sh*t. Funnily enough, I rated him later in his career when he bulked up and became a different type of striker

You know, I was just contemplating saying the same, he had a very frustrating awkward style about him, confused defenders (and us) at times, pulled the odd goal out of the hat and had the affectionate fanfare whe he came on as sun ‘Jabbo, Jaaabbooo’ but was not brilliant but developed over the years to be fair and had better seasons with other clubs subsequently. I remember him missing open goal chances seeking glory than pulling us out of the mire. Always fondly remembered though as ‘a hope’ when he came on to change the game some how even if just to confuse the opposition!
