Tippy tappy Steve Davis football
I'm afraid that Embleton sets us up not to lose rather than to win. There was absolutely no creativity in that midfield before Jobi come on . It was a succession of slow sideways passes. Has Steve Davis come back ? If only we had a player who could drive forward and run at defences. Hang on we do ! We had one wasted at left back and another on the bench.
Rather than overthinking it Embleton needs to get back to the basics and start with more attacking line ups.
We need our left back Widdowson playing at left back.
We need Brophy on the left wing
We need JMD on the right wing
We need Johnson and Soitrou playing in the centre where they can do damage
We need Jobi starting in as many games as possible.
We need 442 formation with players playing in their right positions. It didn't do us any harm when we nearly got to the Championship.
We need to abandon this 'keep it tight and stay in the game ' type philosophy.
Apart from that , everything is fine !

Re: Tippy tappy Steve Davis football
We actually have a very strong spine.
Vig
Happe
Jobi (maybe cisse if he’s playing for a contract)
Johnson
Our attacking should be completely formed around Brophy and JMD. Neither have been consistent but neither have played in their best positions or formations.
As I said before the season started, we will revert back to 442. It’s just how long The experts at the club take to realise.

Yup it feels like the Davis days all over again. That all comes back to Ling imo as that technical style is in his DNA. I think he would've been annoyed had Clay made a tactical foul to prevent that pen situation occuring.

Yes a bullseye comment and wonder why they dont try out team changes as you have suggested, seems more logical to me ?Four four two wrote: ↑Sat Oct 17, 2020 7:56 pm I'm afraid that Embleton sets us up not to lose rather than to win. I have to think that Ross is too much into his coaching manuals and cannot see the wood for the trees.
Coach perhaps, football manager, no.

It's not the coaching manuals Dross is stuck in, he stuck in a black hole and can't get out of the thinking that his ridiculous tactics, formations and
misplacements will actually work. NEWS FLASH DROSS: THEY DON'T.

Re: Tippy tappy Steve Davis football
The problem with 4-4-2 is firstly, for the last 3 years we haven’t had two CMs good enough to hold their own in there and secondly, too many teams now play 3 in there so we’d be overrun.Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Sat Oct 17, 2020 7:58 pm We actually have a very strong spine.

Re: Tippy tappy Steve Davis football
So the players are not good enough for 3 in the middle, which is maybe why we pass backwards and sideways more than forwards.

Re: Tippy tappy Steve Davis football
I think Cisse and Clay could do it, but you’re going to need a lot of creativity down the flanks. Widdowson ain’t going to give you that, Brophy behind McAnuff would.

Re: Tippy tappy Steve Davis football
Which is what I said in my change of formation thread last week. Break up the play and get it out wide to your creative players putting crosses and balls in to the forwards to finish.Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Sun Oct 18, 2020 11:30 am I think Cisse and Clay could do it, but you’re going to need a lot of creativity down the flanks. Its not rocket science.
We have a lack of creativity in our centre midfield area, but plenty in our wide areas, use your strengths and play to them.

What does that mean? You’re talking like it’s harder to play with 3 in the middle than 2.Story of O wrote: ↑Sun Oct 18, 2020 11:29 am So the players are not good enough for 3 in the middle, which is maybe why we pass backwards and sideways more than forwards.
We obviously don’t set up not to lose. We lost the game in injury time after getting caught on the break with players committed forward. We’ve scored 17 goals in 10 games so far, hardly setting up not to lose. Our problem is keeping them out

Re: Tippy tappy Steve Davis football
We've not scored those goals because we're dominating the opposition and pulling away once in the lead to get a second or third. We've had Johnson on a purple patch snaffling balls over the top for a chunk of them.Millennial Snowflake wrote: ↑Sun Oct 18, 2020 1:51 pm

Embleton often says it in the interviews it's about "keep it tight, stay in the game" not "go out and win the game". Did you see Grimsby players charge at our ponderous side to side passing to press the Orient players into mistakes? Where's that physicality and drive in our play?
Also stop counting the sh*t EFL Cup as a relevant game, it's a reserve competition few care if we win or lose. We could score 50 in it and it makes not a jot of difference.

You seem to think we're the Liverpool/Man City of League 2 and should dominate every game from start to finish. If that's your expectation you're always gonna disappointed because very few games actually end up that way.gshaw wrote: ↑Sun Oct 18, 2020 2:22 pmWe've not scored those goals because we're dominating the opposition and pulling away once in the lead to get a second or third. "Keep it tight and stay in the game" is something literally every manager will say most weeks. We're a League 2 team with mostly League 2 level players, playing against other League 2 teams with League 2 level players. Most games are close affairs decided by the odd goal.
Also do you really think Ross and the players aren't trying to win the game? Really?

No he's trying to "not lose" and nick the odd goal, that's a negative approach compared to going out to win the game with a positive mindset.Millennial Snowflake wrote: ↑Sun Oct 18, 2020 2:48 pmYou seem to think we're the Liverpool/Man City of League 2 and should dominate every game from start to finish. Why shouldn't we go out there with the attitude that we can beat anyone in the league? Look at Grimsby yesterday, they gave us no respect on the ball and overall deserved the 3pts over 90 minutes.
As I've said in the past it's like ambition, competitiveness and will to win are dirty words. Still can't quite get over when T&T said with JE they went out to hire a winner (and what a winner he was) but now they're not looking for that as the primary quality in a manager

Fully agree. Look at clubs like Liverpool and Man City dominating using a 4-4-2. It's so obvious 4-4-2 is the answer to everything.

Re: Tippy tappy Steve Davis football
The trouble with yesterday and a big difference was urgency between the two sets of players. We looked like it was a training game and going through the motions whereas they hustled, harried and puts us under pressure all or most of the time.
We were slow in movement and slow on passing the ball. Certain players kill the speed to play which gives the opposition a chance to regroup and get behind the ball again.
