Biggest let down signing
As is likely to happen, due to their recent history with similartype signings, Cavani will probably flop at United.
What highly anticipated signings flopped with us? Examples like the long protracted Billy Beal capture by Tommy Taylor, to the player who scored bags of goals for everyone before and after his time with us, Jamie Cureton.

Re: Biggest let down signing
I'd go with the below, though appreciate that others wouldn't have anticipated them as much as me.
Dave Martin - captained Gillingham to promotion the year before so was thinking he'd be quality but his legs had gone when he got to us and lasted, what, half a season before being released.
Steve Riches - £60k+ for what exactly?
Matt Brazier - thought he looked class but then disappeared for some reason (anyone know why?) and never seen again
Gary Fletcher - thought he'd destroy teams but didn't, I guess mainly because of his illness. Really disappointed we didn't keep him.
James Scowcroft - thought he might still have a lot to offer, but how wrong I was.
Stuart Wardley - thought he'd be a class signing but was bang average.
Darius Henderson - still looked like he could contribute and was genuinely sure he'd score a hatfull when he signed for us. But couldn't be arsed/demotivated by the circus.

Re: Biggest let down signing
Good shout on Ayorinde. After the efforts we went to sign him he wasn't worth the wait.
Will add Luke Weaver too - thought he'd live up to the hype but don't remember him being any good for us and think injury curtailed his Sunderland career so no sell on/add ons from that transfer.

Alex Inglethorpe. Signed as Bazza's first saviour of a forward; had a blinding first game but failed to score that game and for many more games besides. Ended up being a CAM before being regularly seen in the local bookies at 1.30pm

Isyden Christie deserves a shout too....could not score for all the trying in the world in his first season. Looked ok at the start of the second before missing a season and a half. Only then did he start trying in order to get a new contract.....elsewhere.

Who was that guy, from Peterborough I think, who we were chasing forever a few years back and when we finally got him was real average. Obviously made a lasting impression on me.

Re: Biggest let down signing
Ben Alnwick I remember thinking could end up being a real player for us. Great pedigree, just needed a stable club. Left for personal reasons.
Naim Uka. Remember thinking he was wicked whenever I saw him for the youths.
Jamie Cureton as above
Steve Castle's last spell
Michael Richardson who we had on loan from Newcastle. Had a Newcastle supporting mate who bigged him up so watched him a few times in full games and thought he was destined for Premier League stardom. Plays in the Northern League now at 28.
Josh Low looked class, but it never really happened.
Lee Barnard I thought was going to tear it up. Didn't. But did elsewhere.

I wasn't going to mention it but I saw him score for us against Carlisle once. Many, many years ago.

James Scrowcroft : arrived with no little fanfare due to his pedigree, and turned out to be ------------------ a great big pudding

Re: Biggest let down signing
Some good shouts here.
Jamie Cureton certainly, and if we’re talking goalscorers I’d second the nominations of James Scowcroft and Gary Taylor-Fletcher. I’d suggest Sam Parkin too.
Robert Weir and Rhys Wilmot other names which spring to mind.
