Judd will be good at league two level. No need for a right back.

Too many questions about his ability to compete for a full season without injury. Ling just ain’t good enough.Still's Carenae wrote: ↑Sat May 25, 2019 2:04 pmJudd will be good at league two level. No need for a right back.

Judd is approaching his judgement day. If he cannot keep himself fit this season, it will be sayonara.

A rumoured target of ours has apparently been offered a deal by Solihull moors there play style probably would suit him if true.

Hope we can compete with Solihull for the player if we wanted him. Good job Ebbsfleet ain’t after him, we can’t compete with them for players.

Re: Signing National League Players
Looking at it in a simplistic way we need a player capable of scoring goals. The primary role of a striker and one where McCallum has the edge big time. Personally I wouldn’t care if he was a lazy bloke if he banged in 20 goals. Sooner that than a workhorse who scored 5. A team can enjoy a mix of skill sets. But I’m not too sure he is a lazy player at all and unwilling to put in a shift. What I do know is his strike rate is damned impressive.Kitch’s Magic Toes wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2019 10:40 pmThat is an unbelievably simplistic way of looking at it.dOh Nut wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2019 10:10 pmNot too sure his record suggests he is a better choice than McCallum. Re: Signing National League Players
We already have a player ‘capable of scoring goals’; we need to protect him from the physicality that has rendered him comparatively less effective in the second half of both seasons that he’s been with us. Conor fits the bill by being a tall, robust, physical player who wins flick-ons, holds defenders off and can pick a pass. Left footed as well. His addition would free up Bonne to run the channels on the shoulder of the last defender and greatly reduce the sheer amount of physical contests he endures.dOh Nut wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2019 10:59 pmLooking at it in a simplistic way we need a player capable of scoring goals. McCallum doesn’t have the engine for the high press we sometimes employ, is extremely inconsistent with his hold-up play and doesn’t have much of a footballing brain on him. His major asset - attacking crosses - would be mostly negated by our wing back system, which stunts the quality of ball coming into the box from wide areas (Ling is the only one who can cross with any degree of accuracy, and we all know about his deficiencies at he other end). At Eastleigh McCallum thrived on the immaculate service he got from Mark Yeates; a considerably better crosser of the ball than anyone in our squad, let alone the ones we employ in wide areas. Most of our play relies on quick movement on the edge of and into the opposition area; slide-rule passes, cut-backs from the by-line and winning individual dribbling contests (Koroma, Brophy and McAnuff all excel at this) in the middle of the park. In short, unless we change our entire system to accommodate him, McCallum will be comparatively ineffective because he is so over-reliant on others providing him with crosses, damned impressive strike rate or not.
Ps. Wilkinson netted 12 times in 23 games for a desperately average Dagenham side last season, so I don’t know why you’d be worrying about his ability to find the net.

Re: Signing National League Players
Well reasoned case. But my thought process is slightly different. If he plays, who do you drop. Bonne? Negating the value of his flick ons and hold up play or Koroma who is very mobile and high tempo like Wilkinson. Personally I would like to see a player able to give Bonne a rest. He puts in a shift and needs a break. An impact player who can come on, allow JE to change the game style and score goals. We need very different options for the very different situations we will find ourselves in. Whoever comes in will play second fiddle to our current pair, the attraction being league football.Kitch’s Magic Toes wrote: ↑Mon May 27, 2019 1:46 amWe already have a player ‘capable of scoring goals’; we need to protect him from the physicality that has rendered him comparatively less effective in the second half of both seasons that he’s been with us. Re: Signing National League Players
Wilkinson is designed to give Bonne a rest during the game. Personally I doubt that Koroma will be here come the start of the season, but if he is, I’d prefer to see him competing with JMD for the #10 role. He generally plays there anyway, which is what isolates Bonne so often.dOh Nut wrote: ↑Mon May 27, 2019 8:47 amWell reasoned case. But my thought process is slightly different. All very well but remember that Koroma is still very much work in progress when it comes to actually putting the ball in the net.
Dont forget that the last three games we played, ZERO goals scored, so much improvement needed in our ability to score goals if we are to make any sort of impact in Division 2. To me, much of what we played this season was very dour at times, hardly free flowing attacking football with plenty of goals was it !!

Re: Signing National League Players
Hi Sid
Disagree with your assessment of our ability to score goals. Only Harrogate and Salford scored more than us last season, and not by much. The Bonne/Koroma partnership totalled 35 goals. The best pairing in the NL. Speaks for itself.
Of course there are issues. Bonne was doing too much, largely due to CM shortcomings and Koroma learning his trade. But their partnership was beyond compare in the NL. My feeling is they will be even better in L2.
But they need support. Bonne played 46 games last term. 47 being the top by any player. Given his work rate no wonder he lost his edge at times. When we talk about new strikers coming in, they will play second fiddle for sure. Harold is probably happy with that at now. The newbie needs to be prepared for long stints on the bench and when called upon be prepared to perform for maybe 30 minutes. And offer something very different to Bonne and Koroma. Alabi was seen as that, a big powerhouse to complement the Bonne/Koroma style. Sadly not to be.
I honestly believe L2 will suit our style of play more than NL but we still need that strong, physical presence up front (and CM for that matter). Harold can do it a bit but a season is a long time and he ain't getting any younger. Whoever comes in will be on a 2 year deal so somebody in the Harold mould but younger seems a good fit.

Re: Signing National League Players
The football played by the Os was often quite dire this season, OK, it did the job to get us promoted out of the League, but not often free flowing football attacking football at the best of times. Same goes for most teams we played against in the National League !! Wonder if we shall ever see our team play anything like the lovely entertaining style of football often seen in the Bloomfield/Petchey eras ?dOh Nut wrote: ↑Mon May 27, 2019 12:23 pm Hi Sid

Re: Signing National League Players
Teams worked us out. Rough stuff and time wasting. Not pretty to watch at times. Made it difficult for us to play our natural game which was fast, decent football. Too many games degenerated into those that lacked real quality. But we had enough quality to end up top. And at times our football was quite good, but inconsistent. I'd like to think that even though L2 will have its share of hard men, the overall quality will be higher and it could well suit our strengths. Assuming of course we recruit well.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Mon May 27, 2019 12:42 pmThe football played by the Os was often quite dire this season, OK, it did the job to get us promoted out of the League, but not often free flowing football attacking football at the best of times. A good player at National league level . It will be interesting to see how he gets on because it's a massive step up from the National League to League One.
