The National League

Post by The Mindsweep »

Reading several reports from various clubs over the weekend and it's clear that their season beginning this weekend is far from that. They are looking at the Government to provide regular funding to support them whilst the games are played behind closed doors. Can't see that happening before Saturday but if it does there will be uproar in both League 2 and above and the leagues below National Level.

We very lucky to have got out when we did. Feel for the clubs and the non-league pyramid is probably going to look very different in a years time.

The NL/NLN/NLS stitched themselves up by grabbing onto the coat tails of “elite” sports, which was a ridiculous thing for them to do, so they aren’t now able to admit any spectators and generate matchday income they rely on. Unless that changes I can see them binning off the season pdq and mothballing the Clubs - the NLN clubs signed a joint declaration about this last week. Think only York didn’t put their name to it.

Kidderminster never signed declaration either ( not sure if that was because they opposed it or a timing issue re cut off for approving starement)

York were driving force to get NLN declared "Elite" as they thought they could demand promotion as finished 2nd. They then lost in play offs.

The majority of NLN sides didn't want elite status and are non league clubs rather than ex league clubs who don't realise they are not famous anymore.

Getting elite status brought no benefits for any NLN side (except Altrincham and Kings Lynn who were promoted.

It could do, but I fear that we'll see a lot of high net worth individuals "buying" football clubs for the prestige of being a fotball club owner. Then they will find they have to put more money in and will lose interest and that's when teams, especially those with big names, will go to the wall. I'm grateful we have a life-long supporter in Nigel fronting up the money that Kent and others are putting into the club. AGW, we'll survive.

Interesting to hear Nigel say on Talksport that when a person comes in to buy the club from the consortium he wants in good condition

I’m not up on this. What is elite status and how does it change the system.

Rather than cancel the end of last season and block promotion/relegation between tiers 4-6, the NL clubs elected to decide the final placing on PPG and hold playoffs, thereby declaring themselves “elite sports clubs” per Govt/FA rules back then. Spenny will know more, and put us right on any points we are unsure of.

Now the Govt has decided “elite” clubs can’t have any spectators (possibly for 6 more months) the NL clubs are questioning whether to even start their season. Step 3 and below are “non-elite” and can host limited numbers of spectators (and getting bumped up crowds from groundhoppers too). The NL have stitched themselves up badly here.

Surprised they were even accepted.

At least they have hope of there being a phoenix club.

Just imagine, that was almost us.

Looks like the emergency grant has come in so the NL/NLN/NLS can play behind closed doors without going immediately skint.
