other cities go into lockdown, why isn’t London having a second wave?

Post by spen666 »

An interesting topic.

An article in the Grauniad today about it.

Whether you agree with their conclusion, its a good question.

I wonder if the abswer is to do with the very diverse nature of population preventing the dominance of any population group in an area and as such reduces istatistical spikes

I believe the lack of local outbreaks is because those at blu marches and Bournemouth beach were from all over.

It all depends on your appetite for death. Melbourne is down to about 100 cases a day and has extended it's lockdown. Other cities in different countries would be fully open at that level

I think it’s got something to do with exposure. I remember that at the start of the pandemic, Bromley was one of the worst places in the country to be. It now has the lowest infection rates per 100,000 in London. Maybe a coincidence.
At some point i think we’ll find out that many more people have actually had it than numbers suggest, something like 50% of the population in London.

read somewhere A month or so ago that they reckon that London had a higher % of people who've had it as it started here before spreading and lock down kicked in. The figure they quoted was was somewhere between 15 & 20 per cent.

At some point, if the numbers of infections keep rising, as they have in recent days ( weeks?), there will be a full national lockdown once again, perhaps in November.

My thoughts too. It would be interesting to see percentage of population being tested by area but fat chance of getting reliable info tbh.

So, Schools are back and we are being encouraged to restart the daily commute, just as the rates are soaring.

Or perhaps sooner.Hancock stated this morning that the current spike is mainly due to 17to21 year olds. Most of these spikes are north of Watford at the moment. However London will get it soon when more people will be going back to work. We will soon be back to the Save lives slogan

Kids have to go back to school it's doing them more harm mentally if you keep them off.

Most companies are not forcing people to go back in yet. My other halfs company have done a soft re-opening (it's not mandatory) and only 40% of them are going back all no more than a couple of days as week.

I've been in four pubs since they re-opened only one I wouldn't go back in.

Have been passed a few bars where it looked like there was a complete lack of social distancing the old bill should be coming down on these place like a ton of bricks.

Made my first visit since March up that London from the sticks. It felt eerily quiet in most places we went (South Bank, Soho and Mayfair), noticed many SME shops were closed, tourists and office jockeys seemed sparse, roads were not gridlocked, and I didn't enjoy wearing a mask for extended periods on trains and anywhere inside. But it felt pretty safe, nearly everyone was masked up, and there was sanitiser available whenever you entered/exited a place.

Clearly the testing programme is a farce at present. Boris & chums providing a higher percentage of the limited testing facilities to areas where there have been notable rises in infection rate thus skewing numbers even more. London & the SE having had no notable increase now have less testing capacity. All a bloody mess really.
