This isn’t a wind up. In my opinion he is the standout weakest player in our first team squad. There are multiple better options in his position. He has started this season poorly but is still getting selected. It stinks.

It was a great goal by Wilkinson no doubt about that.BoniO wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 10:41 am Surprised more people aren't commenting on how good Wilkinson's goal was. He made that goal out of nothing really. Great run in from the wing and more or less passed it into the net. Terrific goal. That's not to take anything away from Johnson's goal btw - that was pretty good too. Great to see our front players looking confident and taking opportunities.
As for the Ling debate, jeez. He missed a tackle, get over it. He's not great but RedO is just on a non-stop wind up about him. Pinches of salt at the ready......

Re: Highlights v F.G.R
Watching the highlights lings challenge looks a reasonable one, then the camera zooms out and you see the left winger behind him and you wonder why he was in that position needing to make that challenge. There's not enough in the highlights to make a full judgement but it doesn't look good for him.
Not enough said on vigouroux's great save in the first half. He really looks a great keeper

Re: Highlights v F.G.R
That goal is 100% Lings fault. If you are a fullback that high up the pitch you take man ball and everything in that tackle as losing It will almost certainly mean they get a shot at goal.

Do you understand what 100% means ? Nothing to do with Happe putting the ball in his own net.

Yes, I thought that was a terrific save as well. Also he wasn't that far away from stopping Happe diverted own goal. He does look a good keeper so I'm glad we've got him.Adz wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 11:45 am Watching the highlights lings challenge looks a reasonable one, then the camera zooms out and you see the left winger behind him and you wonder why he was in that position needing to make that challenge. However, he's not quite as bad as you make him out to be. Nobody could be that bad ....... remember, even Mother Teresa had knockers.

Re: Highlights v F.G.R
Exactly this. If you commit like that, you have to see it through.
If that had been Judd, the bloke would have ended up on his arse.
If that had been Turley, the bloke wouldn’t have got up again.
Probably would have had a caution but we wouldn’t have been 1-0 down.

Totally agree,Sam Ling is not in the team on merit that is very, very clear and after today’s performance will be sent out on loan to a non league side if anyone will have him.RedO wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 2:47 pmExactly this. If you commit like that, you have to see it through.

I seem to remember the club stating just a short while ago they want players that are capable of playing at this level and above, there is no way that Sam Ling meets this criteria.

Re: Highlights v F.G.R
He is in the team on merit in that he’s our best right back out of him, Judd and Turley. It’s not saying much, and You can argue a case the other two but neither have given any confidence that they’re better options.
Which is why we got the lad from Norwich in and he’ll be first choice if he’s good enough. Most likely he didn’t play yesterday as he’ll have had 1-2 sessions max since joining and probably won’t be able to do 90 mins yet.

Turley is absolutely the best option of the 3, it’s not even close.Millennial Snowflake wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 3:26 pm He is in the team on merit in that he’s our best right back out of him, Judd and Turley. The reason Thomas is here is because Turley is down as one of our 3 CBs.

Re: Highlights v F.G.R
Would imagine that Judd will be the one moved on, apparently Thomas is a attacking full back like Judd whereas Ling is seen as the better defensive full back (cant see it myself) and can play in midfield, if needed.

Can’t agree. Never seen Turley have a good game at RB and should only be a last resort there imoRedO wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 4:14 pmTurley is absolutely the best option of the 3, it’s not even close.Millennial Snowflake wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 3:26 pm He is in the team on merit in that he’s our best right back out of him, Judd and Turley. Judd to be moved on even though he’s better than Ling . A lunge? LOLSid Bishop wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 10:28 amLing just lunged into that tackle, sold himself and did not win the ball. After that, he just ambles back with no urgency or energy about him, big improvements needed.RedO wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 10:02 amYes our shape in the middle was poor (I’m blaming Cisse and Jobi for that) but Ling should have held. We then shuffle across as a defensive unit so Coulson goes to face the bloke with the ball.Mr. Peanutbutter wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 9:49 am As hard as people are going to be on Ling for the goal:
- The midfielder is in so much space with nobody else looking to press, forcing Ling into two choices, press the centre mid or stick with the wide man. If Ling doesn't press, the midfielder has got a ton of time and space to carry the ball into our final third.
- The left wing back is completely open (you'd argue Ling should stick on him in the first place, I'd agree), however Wilkinson has contributed literally 0 when we're out of possession there. He's a striker being converted into a wide player, so I wouldn't expect this to be natural instinct and there's certainly a level of reward from playing him there (e.g. the second goal) - but it doesn't help defensive stability.
- Coulson isn't getting across to the ball carrier, he's got a ton of time and space on the ball and I think a more mobile defender (read Turley) would have covered a lot more effectively.
I get the criticism of Wilko defensively generally but he’s not at fault here.
The amount of space Ling left his bloke in, there ain’t no one getting over to stop the cross coming in. It’s ridiculous to suggest Coulson should have stopped that.
There’s only one bloke to blame for their goal yesterday.
