Not great from Joe for the third but come on, that doesn’t excuse what Lingy did.
Didn't say it does excuse Ling. Ling is terrible, I think we all know that. Widdowson is actually a decent defender...at left back or on the left of a back three. He is not and never will be a competent central defender in a two.
Fair enough. Others were excusing Ling for it, I have incorrectly attributed that to you.

I have seen Joe play CB for us and thought he looked decent tho. Don't ask me who against, was ages ago.

Yeah come on guys, don't criticise him for slicing the ball into his own net from 5 yards out under no pressure. At least he was in the right place.
Would you prefer it if he was out of position and left his man with a tap-in at the back post?

It was a great ball in and Ling had to go for that as he couldn't have known what was behind him. Yeah the execution was wrong but 99 times out of 100 he turns that behind for a corner, it's really not as big a deal as some are making out

Some god damn awful play from Widdowson in there again. Really disappointing as I do like and rate him.
If you watched the Q & A from the other night it is explained in detail
I didn’t watch it.

What was the reason? No need for the full detail, thanks.
They said they were going to try some NEW stuff out & they didnt want
It to be seen as giving fans a bad experuence ,
Probably trying out replays, maybe other stuff like that.
Again .akes sense .

That's not Rоss "digging out" anyone, to me. Rоss hasn't mentioned specific mistakes on Shadrach's part, he's talking about the generality of those younger players "like Shadrach" getting beaten by an U-23 side.
It is a bit.

Compare to the f*ck up by Widdowson for their first goal - he calls it an unfortunate slip. That's not what happened, Joe was dithering on the ball.

Although it is well known im not a fan of Sam Ling, the og was a mistake that can happen to any defender. Ive seen top quality defenders stick a leg out to deflect a ball out for a corner, and it end up in their own goal.
Joe Widdowson isnt a CB end of. He's a fair left back, but not a CB
The Club ( Martin Ling), seem to be trying to 'kid' us fans he is, because probably theres no money for any more players.
The one positive from last night was Lee Angol. He seems to be fit, he's very well balanced, scores with either foot, and very calm in front of goal. He must start the 'proper' games IMO

A win against Spurs had people predicting good things and this game has led to meltdown.

Chill out. Its pre-season and all about giving people minutes.

It’s not the first time he’s mentioned Ogie’s performance negatively in a post match interview. There’s no need for him to be specific about a kid, especially in a pre season friendly.

The club have already got a signed & framed print of that on the wall in the TJS bar with a mini-shrine of Ling jnr memorabilia laid around it.

Point me to anything Rоss said negatively about Ogie's performance in this particular game, or indeed anything at all about Ogie specifically in this game.

Ross's words.

I obviously haven't seen the game, so can't comment. Maybe Ogie did have a stinker. But looking at the highlights package, the only ones having their eyes opened and getting punished by West Hams kids are Joe Widdowson and Sam Ling, neither of whom get namechecked.

It's odd.

Come on. He's named him and then said directly that he's getting punished by players of a similar age insinuating that he isn't up to their standard. He hasn't said, "You're in a first team environment with the a good comparison of people your own age', he's said, by name, that Ogie got 'punished'.

It's not the worst thing to say in the world, but why say it? Why not keep it generic? Why risk smashing a young kids confidence?

The reason he has said it is to justify Brophy starting at full back ahead of him. There are/will be lots of people saying that Ogie should be starting games, that Brophy is wasted at full back etc. This is to ward off that criticism.

That's the long and the short of it.

He clearly meant that at a first team level you get punished as a team if you don’t do your job (presumably referring to the mistakes by Widdowson for the 1st and 3rd goals). Nowhere did he say Shadrach was punished for a mistake he made or that he wasn’t of a good enough standard (“it’s my job to help him keep improving”). You’re just seeing what you want to see.

Like AW has said, it's not the worst thing to say, he's not come out and called him a useless fanny or anything, but he's - very clumsily - stated that the youngsters like Shadrach aren't ready to play week in, week out.

Ross should probably take lessons in English grammar if we’re going to try and interpret every single word.

If he’s said Ogie isn’t ready to play regularly yet that’s fine, he’ll know better than any of us whether he is and no doubt will have had that conversation with him personally. It’s hardly going to smash a 19-year olds confidence saying he’s not ready yet when most 19 year olds aren’t
