But since they split their legend has grown our of all proportion. They're often referred to as an iconic, era-defining band, despite being nothing of the sort when they were around. And (whisper it) Morrissey's best and most interesting work has been in his solo years, while the others have achieved nothing of note (Marr has had a few okay collaborations, but that's about it).
I saw Marr, albeit from a distance, at Truck festival last year. He was dreadful. Some Smiths songs, lots of cover versions, inc a truly staggeringly bad version of DM’s Personal Jesus, and some of his own material. It was properly painful.
